Will “smart” cities lead to surveilled education and social control?

Wrench in the Gears

“What is a Smart City?” is the third entry in my slide presentation series “Education in the Cloud.” If you haven’t yet seen them, prior posts include an introductory essay and “Digital Classrooms as Data Factories.”

Part 3 of Education in the Cloud: What is a “Smart” City

A growing number of metropolitan areas are being shaped by “Smart” City policies. Bloomberg Philanthropy’s “What Works Cities” aims to bring these programs to mid-size cities as well. Even in communities without explicit “smart” initiatives, “innovation” or “empowerment” zones are being proposed, often around school districts, enabling outside interests to sidestep existing legal and contractual protections under the guise of “autonomy” and “flexibility.” I hope the information I’ve pulled together will reveal how “smart city” and “learning ecosystem” interests often intersect and encourage others to think critically about similar programs in their communities. It is important…

Public Schools or Public Screwels? Part 9

speak out against Common Core

I’ve gone to a part 9 in my blog.

Here is a post from an anti-Competency Based Education (an extension of Common Core, so to speak) group:

Utah’s State School Board just posted that they are discussing an assessment MOU tomorrow. The MOU is with 10 “parties” and American Institutes for Research to share assessment items. The parties are: Connecticut, Idaho, Hawaii, Oregon, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, Virgin Islands, West Virginia, and Wyoming. Upon going to the American Institutes for Research’s website, the MOU is for implementation of Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) assessment.
http://www.air.org/event/what-s-next-next-generation-science-standards

But, wait, Utah is not supposed to be using NGSS. And, AIR started work with the 10 parties WAY BACK in August 2016–without any transparency or public knowledge. Or, for that matter, State Board knowledge.

Things that make you say, hmmm.

Here is a post from a New York anti-Common Core group:

So, I went to the Wappingers BOE meeting last night because there was a presentation on the agenda about the progress of the “Strategic Plan” developed by the District 5 years ago (i.e. the implementation of Common Core without reference to what it actually was).
The agenda packet included responses from teachers to a survey about how they thought the standards impacted their teaching and their students.
Since a number of the responses from the teachers included almost verbatim the significant concerns that parents and educators from across the country were screaming and warning districts and legislators about from the moment they were released, the presentation merely referenced the survey but not the actual results.
Shout out to Board Member Ed Sloshower for speaking up about the concerns and not allowing them to go entirely buried and unmentioned.
The presenters (sans Mrs. Lizette Ruiz-Giovinazzi who spoke very authentically and sincerely) instead focused on the “wonderful efforts and continuing professional development of the teachers”.

Fraught with the incessant and chilling jargon-

Rigor
Horizontal and vertical analysis
Matriculation
Data
Models
Profiling
Mapping
Certification pathways
External supports
Strategies
Graduation rates
Framework
Resources
Alignment
Systemic review
Qualitative and quantitative responses
Content
Techniques
and of course, the ever popular “Collaboration”
(“Critical thinking” as always thrown in as verbal window dressing but with zero actual presence)

This ^^^^^^
is how education administrators in this district and across the state and country discuss your children.
This is what they are concerned about.
This is what drives your children’s day, every day, in every grade in every school, 5 days a week all school year long.

There was no mention (from the presenters) about the fact that the teachers acknowledged that Kindergarteners were being overwhelmed with absurd and confusing, age inappropriate curriculum content but starved for actual learning.
That the same is true for virtually all of the special ed students.
And that the high school math as PREDICTED FROM DAY ONE was an overly burdensome, ill conceived program which the elementary math programs fail to prepare the high school students for.
We KNEW.
They KNEW.
EVERYONE KNEW GOING IN.
That this was a train wreck.
And now we have students who have spent the last five years being educationally laid to waste.
And now we have open validation from the teachers that that’s exactly what’s happening.
And the Board and Administration still making presentations about “mapping”.
And having “conversations”.

They’re not coffee table books.
They’re CHILDREN.
REAL LIVE HUMAN BEINGS.
And now they’re in college taking (and paying for) remedial courses. [Remember ‘college and career readiness’? The reason we were doing this to begin with? I guess it didn’t work that well.]
Or struggling through grade school and high school without the most basic skills they need to be successful or simply prepared to meet their own needs in the world.

Whatever “conversations” are going on, they’re not at the board meetings or with the legislators who could change this.
They’re certainly not meaningful enough to move anyone to authentic action. From what was mentioned at the meeting last night, it seems the conversations amount to pity parties for the fact that “there’s nothing we can do because this was forced on us” (as if the board members and administrators are the actual victims here – _-), and then giant planning meetings of the Administrative Mutual Admiration Society about how to map and move our children along through the system before anyone realizes they’ve been educationally starved and destroyed while simultaneously keeping the pensions intact.

We have failed our kids.

We fed them into this destruction machine five years ago and have spent every moment since finding new ways to keep our heads down so no one knows what we did.

I stood at the end of the meeting to state the obvious which should have been stated by the Board Members but of course (save for Ed) wasn’t.

Several of my former colleagues and administrators kind of shrugged their shoulders slightly and hung their heads a bit low.
Others sat up in their standard and tell tale arrogance and dismissiveness.
And as I spoke of the travesty of having allowed our children to be decimated by this financial and political destruction machine with no end in sight, the Board President nodded in agreement as she always does…..before banging her gavel to end the meeting and doing absolutely nothing about it.

Pity the children. 😞

Here is a post from a Georgia anti-Common Core group:

Cobb County Schools will waste precious instructional time next week field-testing questions for the Milestones exam. In total, over 200,000 students across the state are being used as test-company guinea pigs for free.
Thankfully a large group of Cobb parents are screaming ENOUGH! They are refusing to allow their children to participate in these tests.
While the state claims these worthless wastes of time, energy and MONEY are mandatory, it has been made very clear by Governor Deal that parents have, and always will have, the right to refuse participation by their children. The district may choose how to handle refusals. Given the negative value in this effort, we imagine Cobb County would be thrilled not to have to put its students through more hoops for worthless testing.
Opt Out Georgia, its founders, administrators and members support these parents in their efforts to stop the over testing of Georgia’s children. Instructional time is already at a premium.
If the testing company needs to align questions for inclusion in the final tests, we suggest they take an ad out on Craigslist for participants, just like they do for scorers. Its time more parents took back control of their schools.

The tests will return no usable academic information (much like the actual Milestones tests), and no scores will be returned to the state.

Here is an interesting post from an anti-Common Core group:

Do video games collect data? You betcha. #Read and #Share.

The ability to profile and collect information about a player’s interactions with “educational” video games (also called “serious games”) is evidenced by this research collaboration which catalogs each interaction into a standardized vocabulary of data which are collected in real-time and each player can be profiled, analyzed. To see the list of detailed interactions, (like players speaking, dialog, objects clicked on, objects released, buttons pressed, skipping forward or backward in a video, conversation with characters, levels achieved, time spent, mouse clicks, any answers to questions posed because “Many serious games use the Q&A mechanic to assess players”), click the link below.

What is considered an “educational” video game? Interestingly, Microsoft, who owns Minecraft, has created an Education Version of Minecraft, even though many say it adds no value to the classroom. Anyone whose child is into Minecraft, can tell you how addictive that game is. Ever wonder why edtech is promoting video games in the classroom? If you guessed that it is because they KNOW video games are addictive, (the preferred industry buzzword is *engaging*), and they can collect massive amounts of very lucrative data about the child’s behavior and interactions, you might be onto something.

If you are wondering WHO has access to all this data collected, and what they do with it, you are not alone. ADL is partnered with IMS Global, as is Microsoft. Online curriculum and educational games are being touted by the US Department of Education, in something called the Online Education Resources, OER, or #GoOpen. These are all tied to another federal agency, The Federal Learning Registry, which is a joint data gathering project between the US Dept of Defense and US Dept of Education. We wrote about IMS Global, OER, Learning Registry data collection, here. We know that online math programs like DreamBox collect 50,000 data points per hour, and Knewton, an adaptive learning platform, collects 5 to 10 million data points, per student, per day. Don’t forget that another project called LearnSphere, funded by the US Government, makes it possible to connect and collect student data from all online activity, across multiple websites, platforms.

If you are wondering HOW online vendors and even schools can collect and share your child’s data without your knowledge or consent, it’s because a federal law meant to protect children’s privacy, FERPA, was weakened in 2011 so that “parents wouldn’t get in the way” of data collection.

YOU CAN PUT A STOP TO THIS by asking the new US Dept of Education Secretary, Betsy DeVos, and President Trump to fix FERPA and protect children’s privacy. Oh, and ask to opt out of screens at school. **It is your right.**

We are backward engineering P-20 education into human capital management. E-portfolios are designed for seamless “lifelong learning” not to empower workers, but rather to allow employers to efficiently screen out most applicants. Look up Yet Analytics. Question.

This note below came home today in my son’s folder. My child is in second grade. (I taught 2nd, 3rd and 6th).

I thought my child could exempt out of the STAAR. Apparently, my child must sit there and just not take the test?!?!

Clarification is appreciated.

Why is the 2nd grade team worrying with STAAR stuff? They don’t start taking them until 3rd grade? Are they having them do a practice STAAR while the rest of the school is testing?   My oldest is a 5th grader, we’ve opted out by staying home for the entire testing window in the past, which is usually the full week. And my youngest is in kinder, and I plan to keep him home on STAAR testing days this year. Mostly because the younger kids schedules are disrupted even though they’re not taking the test, and they usually don’t even get to have their normal recess times. It’s awful. So, don’t feel bad to keep him home, Momma.

It’s a scare tactic…i think if a certain percentage refuse, they do lose CCRPI points, but the only way that the testing will change is if parents push back against it. No school that i know of has ever been hurt by refusing the test.

PARENTS & TEACHERS: Students whose parents have opted them out of the MCAs will be marked as “not participating”. This wording came out of the recently US DOE accepted (Jan 2018) Minnesota “State Plan”.
If your school has the old MDE forms from 2015/2016 these are invalid and out of date. You may write your own letter. Thanks to MDE Commissioner, Brenda Casselius, for hearing the thousands of emails, phone calls and testifiers. #OptOutMCA

_______________

And here are some replies to said post:

I have a question: For clarification, does this OPT OUT apply to “mid-year assessments”, as well? I have a child who is doing “online public school”. I was told that my daughter is “required” to do a “mid-year assessment” of her reading and math skills. She had to sit at a computer, and read words and sentences to a “teacher”, and figure numbers, for about 20 minutes. I think my daughter did very well. Ten minutes after we were finished, I received an email saying my child does not meet “benchmarks” and tested below grade level in all areas. I was pretty livid. Needless to say, I am regretting my choice to do this online school. My question here is, “Legally, Can I opt out of these types of assessments in the future?” I understand about opting out of MCAs, and polls, and surveys, and such, but is there the same “provision” to refuse these types of assessments? thank you very much for everything!

_______________

I know for those who work with Pearson (K-12 etc.), Pearson is pretty strong in NOT letting opt outs occur. You can always try! But these tests are how many of the companies make their living. If it’s not a standardized test though, but part of the regular class structure, I would think your child would need to take it.

____________

Thx. My 6 year old sat in front of a computer and read words from a long list that appeared on the screen. The woman would point to the words with an arrow and give her a few seconds to say the word. If she started to say the word incorrectly, my daughter would be interrupted and the woman would say the word for her .

So state testing time is coming up here in Minnesota and I reached out to my child’s principal to tell her we are opting out, here was the teacher’s response to this

“This new way of opting out, that is having to fill the form out is new to us to. We were told that if a student opts out it will go in their permanent record that they “did not meet” state testing.”

Will this affect my daughters ability to get into college in regards to having good grades? She is an excellent student and her grades show that, I just don’t want these darn tests to affect her negatively if she doesn’t take them. Thank you!

And to add- you do not have to use the state form. I write a simple letter to testing coordinator, about a month before testing dates. I call or get confirmation of receipt if letter too.
Maybe also let the principal know that the form is not valid.

Those state forms are now out of date with the acceptance of the US DOE for our State Plan. I suggest writing your own letter, too. These keeps the conversation about students under parental authority, not the state’s-want-to-be authority.

* Privilege Walk Exercise

* Blue Eye Brown Eye Exercise

While some of the presentations seem perfectly fine… the above are highly controversial and parents were NOT notified until today. This is happening on FRIDAY of this week.

“Dear IHS Parents/Guardians:

This is an important message about this Friday, January 26, 2018. As you know, Friday is no longer a midterm testing day, it is a regular school attendance day for students, and attendance by all students is expected. Since it is the last day of the 1st semester and a day following 4 days of testing, we decided to put together a great series of activities, presentations and assemblies pertaining to social justice, equity, diversity, healthy decision-making and wellness. We are truly excited to hold our first “IHS Community Values and Wellness Day” on Friday.

All students will attend 6 sessions and have a lunch period on Friday. The sessions are, Building a Community, A Privilege Walk, A Class divided: The Blue Eyed/Brown Eyed Experiment, More Than a Label, Pause Before You Post and a Delphi Substance Use/Wellness Presentation. There is an opportunity for ELA extra-credit as well as raffles for IHS gear and gift cards to some of our local businesses. Friday is wonderful opportunity for our students to grow and learn more about themselves and explore challenging, real-world topics. Please see the descriptions and more specifics in the attachment. Thank you in advance for your support.

Respectfully,
Douglas W. Lauf
Principal”

Here is a post from a Utah anti-Common Core group:

i am so glad that the school can co-parent with me…what would I do without them…

School attendance has a huge impact on a student’s academic success… starting in kindergarten and
continuing through high school.
We realize some absences are unavoidable due to health problems or other circumstances. We also know that
when students miss too much school – regardless of the reason – it can cause them to fall behind academically.
Your child is less likely to succeed if he or she is chronically absent – which means missing 18 or more days
over the course of an entire school year. Research shows:
• Children chronically absent in kindergarten and 1st grade are much less likely to read at
grade level by the end of 3rd grade.
• By 6th grade, chronic absence is a proven early warning sign for students at risk for
dropping out of school.
• A child is chronically absent if he or she misses just two days every month!
Some considerations that will help ensure that your child attends school regularly on time are:
• Make sure your children keep a regular bedtime and establish a morning routine.
• Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
• Ensure your children go to school every day unless they are truly sick.
• Avoid scheduling vacations or doctor appointments when school is in session.
• Talk to teachers, counselors, or administrators for advice if your children feel anxious about going to
school.
• Develop back up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call a family member, neighbor,
or another parent to take your child to school.
Let us know how we can continue to partner with you in behalf of your children so that they can attend school on
time every day. Together we can help your child to be successful in school! If you have any questions or need
more information please contact Windridge Elementary.

I found the following post in the above Utah anti-Common Core group and I believe it hits the nail on the head:

Many parents do not care because our culture has made them irrelevant.
Remember the Village? If children are raised in care facilities, schools, and after school activities, where do they learn to run a home, have any kind of routine, much work ethic, and how to care for others? The Village somehow does not teach these things and many families stopped teaching them before I entered college. In the 1970s.

School was sold to the parents of the boomers as life’s panacea and my generation was raised for careers. When I got to college, precious few of my room mates had any life skills. They could not manage a check book, no wonder so many ended up in debt! They had very limited cooking skills. One roommate could only make tacos. None of them cleaned up after themselves. They said their moms did it all because they wanted a perfect house. That generation got married, went to careers and many of their children ended up latch key and not trained to either run a home or raise children. Many of those entered parenthood with even fewer skills. We have gone down hill because parents stopped parenting, thinking, if I get the best teachers, Sunday school teachers, coaches, and youth leader, my job is done. But as long as we provide the Village mentality, no one takes responsibility for the outcome. Its always someone else’s fault. Parents, society, and the village are all partners in this mess.

Most parents I have worked with, it never occurred to them they needed to train their children. They just thought all they had to do was tell them what do do or stick a chart on the wall. When their children are untrained and developing executive function, they are asked to do things independently they are not ready for, parents get in battles with their children.

We have made a mess of things as a society. We just cannot blame the parents only, most of whom were never taught by their parents–
Gen Xers, because they were not taught by their parents
Boomers, because they were not taught by their parents,
Boomer’s moms were not taught by their moms during the war, because they were too busy doing the work left by the men who went to war.

After WWII the men came home. 10% of homes had tv in 1950 by 1960 90% had them. The false narrative sold to moms in the 50s via TV (moms who had not been taught during the war) was that dad went to work, children went to school, moms did everything else. Why do I say false narrative? Because mom doing everything, was not the previous norm, families worked together and children got work ethic and how to run a home by working with their parents. Now all of the sudden the modern mom was shown women in dresses with pearl necklaces, immaculate homes, and children with little responsibility outside school.

The 60s women rebelled against that narrative. So we threw the baby out with the wash. Most men and women still marry. We prepared generations for careers but intentionally did not raise them to deal with domestic duties of running a home or parenting. As if getting a high paying job would somehow cause the house to run by its self and the village can raise the children. This was short sighted. It is a result of myopic feminism.

Later some tv working moms had housekeepers.

Now Moms get told to assign chores, but chores assigned without the training, underlying habits, and the developed executive function needed to work independently, do not usually lead to work ethic, but to procrastination.

As a result, many parents are filled with unrealistic expectations and few skills to cope– they check out. Sure, there are parents that can parent and run a home, but too many struggle with this, because they were not taught and because all the years they grew up they were given the message in school that somehow, the domestic work of rearing families and caring for our homes is demeaning. Of course it does not need to be that way. But society is unwilling to face the issue and make the changes needed. The result is this will continue. And for every family in this situation that has more than two children, that means more of the next generation will be unprepared.

We could revalue families. Revalue carring for our homes. Revalue the discipline of habit. Nah, I doubt it will happen..

____________

And here is a reply to said post:

You make some really excellent points! I especially was drawn to the concept that schools and society are training kids for the job world, but no one is training them for family life and responsibilities. And the latter of the two is infinitely more important. Remember the quote, “No other success can compensate for failure in the home.” What does success in the workplace matter if our families are in ruins?

_______________

And here is yet another post from the Utah anti-Common Core group:

Shall we take up a collection and send a copy of this to every member of the state school board, local boards, legislators over education, Governor’s office and Utah Technology Council?

“Rather than deepening students’ intellectual curiosity, educational technology is too often cumbersome and distracting, causing needless frustration and greatly extending homework time. Rather than becoming the great equalizer, electronic devices are widening the achievement gap. On a mission to educate and empower parents, Clement and Miles provide many real-world examples and cite multiple studies showing how technology use has created a wide range of cognitive and social deficits in our young people. They lift the veil on what’s really going on at school: teachers who are powerless to curb cell phone distractions; zoned-out kids who act helpless and are unfocused, unprepared, and antisocial; administrators who are too-easily swayed by the pro-tech “science” sponsored by corporate technology purveyors.”

State Representative Briscoe Cain publicly maligned one of his own constituents yesterday, making unfounded accusations against him on social media of all places. I pray his constituents make it very clear to him that his libelous gossip was not only unbecoming for an attorney but violated the public trust, as he is supposed to be the voice of the people.

January has been a tough month for Conservative voters in Texas. Jonathan Stickland has called us liberal, crazy and unreasonable because we are shining the light on the lie of school choice.

One of Dan Patrick’s morning shows attacked conservatives who have backed a particular legislator, calling them liberals and crazies, going as far as to call the rep a drunkard and say he would not help his neighbors if they were drowning.

The Texas Republican party is about to feel the effects of this huge divide. Texans tend to put up with this crap a lot longer from Congressmen. We are on the bubble in Texas and this one issue could be enough for Texas Rs to lose their power play. People have had it with the lies and personal attacks. These cowards won’t debate us publicly. Instead they use tactics like we saw the GOP use on Roy Moore. Not smart. Look at their results.

Here is a post from a Washington anti-Common Core group:

Question? We opted our daughter out of testing and now they put her in a 2nd grade classroom during testing and had her doing the second grade work which was math. My daughter was confused as to why she wasn’t doing her own math. I called the teacher and she said that she felt that by doing the second grade math would help her with her current math by giving her confidence and help other kids with their work. So I told her that I didn’t know our daughter was that far behind in math. She said that that was just her thinking on the matter? What should we do? Can we pull her from school for that time? I don’t want my daughter made fun of or feeling bad like she is dumb?

_______________

And here are some replies to said post:

You can tell the school in writing that this felt like a punishment. You do have the option to keep her home, especially if they can not make adequate arrangements and this was not okay for anyone.

_______________

Make sure thay everything, and I mean everything is in writing. You can pull her suring the testing times. The teacher should have discusses this plan with you first, but acvorsing to OSPI, theu are under no legal authority to tell parents anything. Want to know? Better ask very clear concise questions. Yes, I know from experience.

______________

Is she in 3rd grade? Can they not find a same grade level classroom to put her in?

_____________

Yes she is 3rd grade. The other two 3rd grade classes are doing the testing also.

______________

Well, talked to the teacher today and she got a little tight liped as she said that she could make provisions to give our daughter other work. I proceeded to tell her with our daughter next to us that our daughter felt demeaned being part of the 2nd grade class. The teachers attitude seemed to change and she told my daughter that that wasn’t her intentions. I told the teacher that I would rather have her in school doing something productive rather than keep her home and tge teacher then agreed. Thank you all so much for your help!

This is what I’m running into. I kind of gave up on opting out b/c in high school it becomes vaguer and I want my child to do the tests he needs in order to complete the class (esp the ones with college credit) I was alot more vigilant in elementary/middle school with all the testing that I believed was unnecessary but face it, kids DO take tests to show knowledge.

______________

My solution to this is, my children are opted out of all Chromebook activities(including my high schoolers). If it is an important test it can be taken on paper and done with a pencil. Just my opinion and teachers have honored my choices.

_______________

yup – cause you will NEVER convince me that any work now or testing, etc is only between student and teacher – especially when ALL work is done on a computer – it’s all DATA being gobbled up and the teachers are FORCED to tell parents differently. I like your requirement – and there are plenty of kids that are doing things on paper because of it.

______________

We have never used the chrome books or in our case iPads, that are made available to students. I do fee that regular tests and quizzes administered throughout the duration of the class should be suffice.

What this article does not say:

…That there isn’t a person in the State who can tell you how much it costs Utah to comply with the Federal mandates to get that funding. From where I sit, it looks like it could be a net loss, but the fact that it hasn’t been tracked is outrageous. Think about it, they’re threatening to withhold the $ because the 1% of opt outs over their threshold slightly skews their data. How does government have rights to data on citizens and citizens not have the right to data on our $?

…How Senator Hatch, who was the co-sponsor of the Federal Bill under which these funds are threatened, promised everyone who didn’t bother to actually read the bill that it would return control to the states in spite of the fact that the USED could hold our state hostage over one percent of one detail of our overall plan.

…That the opt out is protected under State Law and it’s the Federal Bureaucracy holding the “poor” kids hostage to force a change to State law, not the parents who are merely exercising their natural and lawful rights to direct the education of their own kids.

… The article does admit that the test has “lost favor” with both teachers and parents, and that it’s the higher performing students whose engaged parents are opting out which begs the question, why are they forcing a test that those whose lives are most impacted are finding useless and rejecting? As a parent from the assessment review panel, it is my opinion that test is so flawed that it is absolutely unfair way to measure teachers and schools and a stress-inducing waste of time for students.

How much is your liberty to direct your own child’s education worth to you? I’m not ready to sell my birthright for a mess of SAGE pottage.

The program requires DATA COLLECTION/STATE REPORTING & the Board can contract with a THIRD PARTY to do the evaluations. This is a part of cementing our ties to federal ESSA requirements…

White Pine County School District may be the only district in the state where parents can contact the superintendent’s office to get the official SBAC opt-out form, other districts will attempt to jerk parents around. If you get an “official” opt-out form from your district please send it to me & I’ll post it here. If candidates let me know they will sponsor and/or support SBAC opt-out legislation in the 2019 session I’ll post their names here. #Watch this video #NOW before it gets removed.

In this 2011 video presentation, Vander Ark essentially says personalized digital learning is more productive and cheaper than teachers and urges leaders to ‘make the shift’. “It means a different staffing model which costs less and works better”

“I want to give you a quick and conceptual look at why I think the pivot to ‘personalized digital learning’ is a really big deal, said Tom Vander Ark. He told the education leaders that they should “have a team of teachers work with two to three to 400 students” virtually and online….in short, it’s not Blended Learning in my definition if you’re not changing your staffing model and that’s where this gets tough because you’re talking about differentiated staffing. That means different levels, and distributed teaching. That means some teachers teaching remotely. So if you’re going to staff your school in a different way, that means a different staffing model that costs less and works better. ..it’s time to plan the shift.”
——
We know there’s little to no evidence that “personalized learning” works. Many parents, education advocates, and teachers are concerned about safety, privacy, efficacy surrounding online personalized learning.

Why did policy makers, school board members, teachers unions, jump on the artificial personalized learning bandwagon to sell out teachers and students? Did they buy into the Vander Ark gotta make the shift sales pitch without evidence to support personalized learning’s effectiveness or researching its health risks? Are these same policy makers and Silicon Valley folks going to repackage and rebrand personalized learning, give us a new name for the online learning system that collects and remembers and analyzes every click? Will they repackage personalized learning as something “new” like competency based (blockchain) education and tell it is somehow different and better and safer?

We need to hold tech companies and educrats accountable.

Parents need to be given the choice of textbook and face to face human teacher, rather than screen learning. Sensitive data (biometric, medical and mental health, behavioral evaluations) should never be collected or leave the school without parent consent. In recent days, former Silicon Valley folks have acknowledged problems with the tech industry.
Let’s hope these ex-Silicon Valley folks and policy makers will truly help us protect children.

Let’s hope they will give parents a voice.

Carol Burris explains the ‘hoax’ here. (Mmmkay)

“Parents pledge not to enroll their son or daughter in a public school or a charter school. In exchange, they get nearly all of what the school would have spent (usually 90 percent) placed on a debit card or in an account. The remaining 10 percent is used to fund program administration.

“Parents can use the money for private or religious school tuition, online learning, books, hippotherapy (horseback riding for therapeutic purposes) and home schooling — or they can choose to spend minimal dollars on K-12 education and save for college.”

===> “There is no obligation that the curriculum that is used to teach students who use ESAs to attend private schools be “developmentally appropriate, challenging or even accurate.”

“My letter to Principal of HS ****

Hello, Mr. ****
My child/children, *****
informed me that there will be a Student Walk-Out in late April in response to the horrible events at Parkland, FL this month.

While I am a proponent of our students joining together in fellowship against violence, I am concerned about the underlying nature and message of this scheduled event.

There are growing political and special interest groups that appear to be exploiting the tragic murder of 17 innocents for the expansion of agendas which aim to infringe on the 2nd Amendment rights of law abiding American citizens. A protest against the Bill of Rights using our children to drive an agenda. This message is one I vehemently oppose.

I join the ranks of many concerned parents who would like to see enhanced security at our High School entrance ways which would help deter a “bad guy with a gun” by a “good guy with a gun”. Sadly, even with ( your high school) most stringent firearm laws, a criminal will find ways to break them—as a non-prescribed drug will find its way into the hands of a drug dealer despite our laws; as illegal border crossings continue despite our immigration laws, those who legally obtain citizenship and valid doctors’ prescriptions should never be shamed or punished for the vile actions of these violators.

I am hoping we Parents will be notified about April’s “Walk Out” to better understand its goal and intended mission so that we are better able to discern if participation is in the best interests of our children — our young American minor citizens.

Thank you for taking the time to read my letter, and for always being proactive in keeping our children safe at High School ****.

Here is a post from a Georgia anti-Common Core group:

A web site has been set up to shame GA legislators who have not jumped onto the school choice bandwagon and supported every piece of legislation that facilitates its kudzu-paced expansion. It is NOT my intention to malign these legislators or school choice supporters. But I have concerns. Please take a minute to read my explanation and see if you share my (somewhat over-simplified) concerns…

I have looked at a lot of evidence and been lectured by a lot of people. I’ve concluded that “school choice” is a mixed bag, at best. Despite the “school choice is the magic bullet that will fix education,” mantra that is being pushed by both parties, I don’t believe School Choice will improve anything, as long as common core is the ONLY CHOICE in public schools.

I am not against school choice. There just isn’t any definition of exactly what that is. Or what it isn’t. And I prefer to support parental choice, which many parents have to sign away, when they sacrifice to get their kids into out-of-neighborhood charter schools. There are a lot of negatives like that around this movement, but they are never discussed. (Why is that?)

Our first order of business needs to be getting rid of common core and ESSA if we want to restore education IN EVERY PUBLIC SCHOOL.

I avoided criticizing school choice as long as I could. There is so much rampant pro-School Choice fervor, it’s pretty much a no win. But I have to be intellectually honest and I don’t think blind allegiance to a nebulous ‘school choice’ agenda is going to fix much, as long as common core is in EVERY public school.

I also have concerns that people OUTSIDE of GA (including Betsy DeVos’s Foundation) have FUNDED the school choice movement here. And they have never helped us in our quest to Stop Common Core. (One California-controlled organization actually worked against us.) So who is calling the shots in GA? I don’t think it is Georgians. I know it isn’t parents. And that is troubling.

Apparently, the school choice FUNDERS are back in GA, and they are maligning legislators who are not blindly jumping on the choice bandwagon. They’ve got something going called the Georgia Center for Opportunity – a school choice pushing web site that is giving away yellow socks to go with those nifty scarves.

I encourage Parents to get information from a variety of sources and perspectives, and make your own determination about whether supporting a blanket, ill-defined school choice agenda is the way you want to go.

We’ve got Charter-mania in GA already. And while the jury is still out, the negatives are coming to the surface. I will try to post some resources in this thread and invite some other activists to comment. Please also post your information pro- and con. We need to have this discussion. And our legislators and gubernatorial candidates need to hear it.

And here are some replies to said post:

Government regulated “school choice” is, in fact, a loss of parental rights.

_______________

I have a question for all elected officials, on both sides of the political aisle- Are you for Jeb Bush’s ExcelinEd yellow scarves School Choice Week? Which, by the way, is the same thing Obama was pushing, he just called it National Charter School Week.

________________

The end game is the same.

A loss of parental rights and true local control. Along with the collection of private student data that will be used for online adaptive assessments and instruction to modify the attitudes, values, beliefs, and behaviors of American students by third-party public/private partnerships, who will then profit from the unethically and illegally obtained student data.

Anyone for a blanket “School Choice” needs to understand what that actually means and just how dangerous it is.

Jeb Bush/Betsy Devos Choice is the Carrot to federal control.

__________________

They have destroyed our education system intentionally, so they can rebuild it using Public/Private Partnerships financed through Social Impact Bonds (SIBS) or Pay for Success (PFS). They will profit off the backs of our children and their teachers. All while harming countless numbers of our children in the process.

Ed Reformers- Obama and Jeb Bush’s Equity in Education plans for our entire country:

• charter schools replace public schools:

• everyone has federal Title I choice funds to go to any school (charter, private or religious schools)

• every child is taught the same standards:

• every teacher must teach the same standards:

• every test must be aligned to these standards:

• curriculum and software is aligned to standards:

• everything listed here is aligned to government data collection compliance.

I hope that helps. 😉

______________

Purposes Behind Common Core/College and Career Ready National Standards now codified into law through the passage of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) and the Every Student Succeed Act (ESSA).

Shifts Education Philosophy– An education of Opportunity (Equal Opportunity) based on academics; reading, writing, math, and history has shifted to an education of equity (Equal Outcomes) based on attitudes, values, beliefs, and behaviors.

Broadened Impact – The Common Core/College and Career Ready National Standards expand the target be from K-12 (Kindergarten through 12th grade) to a P-20 (Pre-school through College, Trade or Graduate School) Workforce system.

Testing Based Outcomes– The Common Core/College and Career Ready National Standards shifts from the “Mental” (Academics and Knowledge-Based Tests) to “Behaviors” (Performance Standards and Competency for the workforce).

Adjustments to Ideology– Change American’s worldview from nationalism into globalism and allow a government controlled economy known as ”Dirigisme” or the more common use–a dirigiste economy. It means essentially a state-directed economy mandated by federal and state legislation.

Dismantle traditional public schools in favor of charter-like structures (public/private partnerships) that will be forced to generate student data for corporate profit and state control.

Through Government regulated school choice they access and control private schools where the state has been unsuccessful before.

A FEDERAL UNCONSTITUTIONAL SYSTEM has been locked in place through the passage of federal and state legislation (designed like a set of gears) “rigged” if you will, to sort our children into positions within the workforce, based on the Soviet model. This is about controlling the next generation of Americans. You are no longer an American who lives in a global economy, you are a global citizen who happens to live in America.

___________

thank you for this information. It is indeed, a tangled web. From my brief research, it seems that the GA Center for Opportunity is funded by some of the same foundations that pushed Common Core and Charter schools in GA. They are part of the State Policy Network and also affiliated with ALEC. They reportedly have a cumulative $80 million at their disposal. So they will probably be able to pass whatever they want to pass.

#WHOA. This Colorado bill (SB159) would require 75% of parents/students/community to take the “need assessment” that ESSA already defines as:
‘‘(B) A needs assessment that identifies the academic, physical, nonacademic, health, mental health, and other needs of students families, and community residents.” -ESSA page 280.

So-can they really REQUIRE these surveys as a condition of attending a school? Do folks know that this information is not kept in the school and is shareable? (Student ed records are currently not covered by HIPPA and FERPA allows sharing.)

And yet another post from said group:

My son just sent me a text. He is in 9th grade and they are in the middle of sage testing which he is opted out on. He is the only one in his Biology class opted out. His teacher wasn’t too happy about creating a new test for him by the way. His text reads today. “Turns out I have a final on Monday and Tuesday in Biology. The sage is to prepare them to take this test. People who take the sage, if they get a good grade, can keep that score and when they take the final, if they do poorly than they can use their sage score instead.” MY QUESTION: Is this right? My kid is struggling in this class already. So, these students get two tries and he gets one. Is that right?

___________________

And here are some replies to said post:

It’s my understanding that there can be no rewards or punishments associated with such tests, and this is clearly rewarding the other kids and punishing him. He should get two tries as well WITHOUT the first try being Sage, and all should be equally accountable for taking and being graded on the final.

They can hand him the sage test printed out to take HOME then…to study the questions….

the teacher can’t do that. that’s giving an advantage to students who take the SAGE test.

that’s a lot of info, but i think if you printed out the Testing Ethics Policy, highlighted those areas to show the teacher & then told them that it’s backed up by current state law & State Board Rule (which you can provide proof, if they need it), you should be covered! 🙂

___________________

Update: Our principal received this yesterday at 1pm. Hopefully you can read this on this red paper but he is telling me the law has just changed.  A student may take the sage assessment and the end-of-course test and the student may choose the higher score. If they ace the sage test they can also decide not to take the final at all. A student opted out takes comparable end of course test only. 😡 I explained to him that this is an unfair advantage! They get two tries and my kid gets one. His answer was that this is the new state rule and we have to stick to that. He also offered that most teachers, and I am dealing with a difficult one (tenure ring any bells?) might make an accommodation for my student to retake the test if they do poorly. Seriously.

we can appeal this, but we’ll need a lot of people willing to do that.

no laws have changed, i know that for certain. i got the state rule directly off of the State Board’s website. i will look in one more place when i get back home, but i don’t remember the wording changing that dramatically.

________________

Well this is interesting then. Ok… it is not state legislated. BUT it has been handed down by Utah State Board of Education. STILL… they get two tries and opted out students get one. What do I do here? Can I force the issue? To me, this is discrimination.

AND…. the rule is handed down the DAY THEY START TESTING. Seriously.

I was told today by a honors math teach in Cache that they passed a change that allows teachers to count the SAGE on grades. GRRRRR….

______________

I’ve heard that from a couple people! they’re wrong. the SAGE cannot count on grades. it sounds like they are twisting the rule to fit what they’ve wanted all along. the State law still stands:

“(4) A student’s score on the standards assessment adopted under Subsection (2) may NOT be considered in determining:
(a) the student’s academic grade for a course; or
(b) whether the student may advance to the next grade level.”
https://le.utah.gov/…/Title53E/Chapter4/53E-4-S303.html…

we need to request a Public Hearing to get this rule change reversed (see page 8): https://schools.utah.gov/…/2b06719b-cfe5-405d-a48c…

_____________

Exactly! That is what I was thinking. My son is at Ridgeline. Accommodate a parent’s request but it is NOT the rule. Right?

_______________

My daughter goes to Ridgeline too. I went the rounds last year with a biology teacher. Now the honors math teacher is telling my daughter this nonsense today.

_______________

has that been added recently about parents being able to request?

____________

yes, it looks like it was just approved in January’s meeting. i’m still researching to find out when it goes into effect, but i know that it must be published first (& it hasn’t been) & there is a time period where rules can be appealed if a Public Hearing is requested.

_________________

I feel like I need to go back in there tomorrow. I had all this info but couldn’t get it printed by the time I went in to the office.[Name Withheld] did you get the email? I got that because I work as a teacher in an elementary school. I’m a music teacher. The principal was going to call the district to let them know that they needed to inform the parents of this new change. I was just taken back because I feel like… wait, what? When did this happen and how convenient it hits now as they start testing.

____________

did, thank you! they are jumping the gun & they are not interpreting the rule correctly.

________________

I talked to the district last year – they were soooo confused and they didn’t believe me when I tried to tell them what the law said, but I FINALLY got them to call the state board. Then they had to call the principal (because he also didn’t believe me, despite the fact that I had all the documentation for him to look at.) and set him straight.

__________________

reading this, i believe this is why the rule is not finalized yet. they shouldn’t be able to implement it yet because it hasn’t gone through a public comment period (plus, they are implementing it incorrectly).

https://www.schools.utah.gov/…/da9331c4-fb46-483b-b102…

_______________

So do we know if it has gone public? Sounds like, no. I know the principal called the district and told them they should be letting parents know. I wont be the only one raising eyebrows here. So… what do we do? Where do we go with this? A hearing has to be requested within a week? Who does that? How? This really is all out of my league and I am not sure what to do with this.

____________________

I would have a discussion with the teacher and/or the principal, I would ask that since the other students get to take the higher of the two tests, that your child be given the opportunity to take a second test or retake the first test taking the higher score of the two.

________________

I have come to the teachers using the angle that the SAGE is a waist of my child’s learning time. He can use the time to learn more. The teachers and principal seem to agree with that especially on subjects he is lacking in. I also let them know Im happy to provide the work he can do during testing, Im also happy to come to the school and teach him if needed. They are always surprised. Im not sending my kids to school for day care, believe it or not I expect them to actually learn something that will help them contribute to society, not learn how to take a test.

____________________

There has been a problem with how the rule was interpreted by some staff and subsequent information that was sent out to districts.

It will be discussed in Standards and Assessment committee in March.

This committee doesn’t have a strong presence of board members that fight for opt-out rights so please write and come express your concerns to the board.

In my opinion, the SAGE should not have bearing on their grades at all.

Here is a post from a friend of mine:

Ready… Why are schools tinder boxes? Multiple posts pointing out a common thread. A social justice practice dealing with Bullying – Progressive-liberal policies known as “Restorative Justice”—> NO discipline.

I’ve called it kumbaya circles that endanger students and staff. THIS is the public school solution to bullying. It is NOT working. Parkland was awarded accolades for best implementation of Restorative Justice in Florida…

No consequences. No discipline. No suspensions. No expulsions. Why? Schools ratings are determined by reports to outside agencies AND THIS progressives claim discipline is the driving force of the “Schools to Prison pipeline.”
Here we go…

1. The Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights went into Durham Public Schools in 2013. For three years, suspensions dropped. Then in year 4, they spiked. So did violence. heraldsun.com/news/local/cou… 1/x

2. We’ve seen from other investigations that the disorder and violence in schools does not matter to OCR investigators. At least in OKC, they admitted they never talked to teachers. Who knows if they looked at the awful teacher surveys and comments.

3. These investigations are often totally secret. I rarely see news coverage of even the fact that they’re occurring. In Milwaukee, not even the school board knew they were under investigation for 3.5 years. jsonline.com/story/news/edu… 3/x

4. OCR forced Milwaukee to overhaul its school discipline policies. The district has kept student surveys secret, but man, this certainly doesn’t look good. For this massive fight, the students “face *potential* suspensions.”

5. The the wake of Parkland, there’s been a whole lot of debate on gun policy. Virtually none on discipline policy. Perhaps worth more debate. As @washingtonpost noted, Broward County embraced restorative justice and dramatically decreased police referrals

6. However, it is worth noting that OCR went into New Rochelle NY and forced them to change their discipline policy. Last month, three students were stabbed in one week and Valeree Schwab was killed with a steak knife. No mention of OCR in public forums. nypost.com/2018/01/30/fat….

7. Two more deaths in schools that embraced Restorative Justice. Matthew McCree in Urban Assembly (NYC) and Joevon Smith in Ballou (DC). I only know the full story of one of them. Someone should look into Smith’s death. nytimes.com/2017/09/29/nyr…;

Sure there’s more…

I saw these two articles within minutes of each other. One was tweeted from Tom Vander Ark on Getting Smart. The other was through Google alerts on social impact bonds:

We see evidence of it taking place, you see the latter from Larry Fink CEO of Black Rock, from the company portfolio, $6.3 trillion worth of investment, saying that he expects CEOs to deliver positive impact socially and environmentally as well as financial return. That needs to translate into allocations from portfolios to impact investment, allocations from pension funds, from insurance companies and from mutual funds from high network individuals and in a way that is a process which has already started to become visible so the Ford Foundation made a billion dollar allocation from its endowment to investing in impact.

When you look at the business plan for India impact fund of funds, we work PwC, we work with UNSIF (United Nations SDG Impact Finance) and again Nishith Desai and associates to create those and we are happy to let you know that Sir Ronald has secured some of the leading leaders on board.

http://businessworld.in/…/In-Impact-Inves…/26-02-2018-141792

“To prosper over time, every company must not only deliver financial performance, but also show how it makes a positive contribution to society,” said BlackRock CEO Larry Fink in a letter to CEOs. “Companies must benefit all of their stakeholders, including shareholders, employees, customers, and the communities in which they operate.”
With more than $6 trillion in assets under management, BlackRock is the largest investment management firm. It is remarkable, then, that the head of the world’s biggest investment service told CEOs to stop fixating on quarterly profits and focus on total impact.

PWC said there’s a significant opportunity to change the way we all do business using the momentum of the Millennium Development Goals set by the UN.
Considering the Total Impact of Schools
Like CEOs chasing quarterly earnings per share targets, educators have been chasing point increases on reading and math tests–that’s what standards-based reforms seem to be asking for. This myopic focus has had negative consequences–less art, music, and recess in elementary grades; less applied and career education in high school.

It’s in ESSA – we warned this was gonna happen. It’s the accountability competent. TESTING IS THE GLUE FOR common core er, I mean colleg and career STANDARDS. STATES SUBMITTED PLANS.

But, Opt Out leaders claimed it wasn’t true.
Well…It is true.

———————

Caveat, in NY they submitted two plans for accountability (one for districts and the other for Feds er, State) to “accommodate” for opt outs. Feds didn’t like it and scores for opt outs will be ZERO.

NYS some claim;
1. In district – opt out would be not scored/counted. So opt out leaders *claim* a 1 is only for FEDERAL record keeping. Mmmhmmm. Sure it is.

So private schools without attachment to ESSA funding and homeschooling is the only way to avoid this on a record then, right?

The ‘opt out/refuse’ routine has gone on too long. I ‘opted out’ my daughter from the 2014 PARCC field test, and my other one since then. And how much has the movement grown and to what end??? Too many parents rolled over and played dead on the matter, giving the government time to find a way to make it personally unfavorable for parents to opt out/refuse. What a shame. We are being steamrolled because of our own inaction.
______________
Yep #OptOutisDead and has been at least two years.
Changed nothing either. Couple days opting out in spring testing is not a “movement” never was. A few headlines and now it’s the annual thang to do…or was. Shame alright.
___________
Opt out anyway. It’s time we fought this at least as hard as the elites fight to try and push gun control and President Trump. They are staging college protests and student and teacher walkouts. What are we doing?

“A matter of time” at the expense of the children’s futures. My town’s district had a very noticible ‘alignment’ to CC in 2012. That’s when I wondered, ‘what the heck is going on?’ I know my youngest daughter didn’t receive the same education as her siblings because since she didn’t receive the same foundation as they did, what could her teachers have ‘built on?’ That was SIX YEARS AGO!! How many students have followed?? All without a good foundation. The uprising WILL come, but what will be the damage by the time it does???
_______________
We are in same boat! We gave had five children & oldest four are in mid to late 20’s and our youngest in 7th grade(same district )however from the time we had youngest son start kindergarten and definitely by first grade we saw lack of “true”learning & teaching! Teachers were out of classroom more for “lessons and learning to cc standards and grading these horrendous tests! We sat down with principal as well as superintendent and spoke out to the nonsense of kids taking tests on computers or laptops for gym class for one then taking away recess time or limiting recess time outside depending on grade level. Elementary school was he’ll fir our youngest when it should have been great joy as it was for our oldest children with so many fond memories! To make matters worse our district k-12 was fully implementation of IB!!!it’s like cc on steroids!

I thank God that at least mine were out of elementary school (in 2012) by the time I learned what was going on. My heart breaks for parents with young ones and who understand the situation…there’s no ‘faking it’ for them. It will be a hard road.
___________
We have refused all the nys testing and fought hard each year from 3rd through 6th grade in refusing out. What should parents do now? I taught at home during these days but now at middleschool (our district has elementary from k-6th )not sure what this will mean for parents/ kids who refuse out.
This whole situation stinks!

Mira Loma High School and Churchill Middles School Students in Sacramento are planning a walkout tomorrow. I have seen that there are huge efforts to get kids to walk out March 14th and I hear it is being pushed nationwide.
I also got an email from “move on” talking about how they have the NRA on the Ropes and to get your kid to participate in the walkouts planned tomorrow. This has gone on far enough!
I told my girls that unless they can accurately explain why the 2nd amendment was put in the constitution they couldn’t participate. And why this walkout will make a change? They couldn’t. They were doing it because others told them they needed to.

2 things this is an unapproved absence and is cutting class.
Both are suspension worthy events in my book.( and cause for severe grounding in my house)

Better ask your student if they are going to blindly follow or lead….

And here are some replies to said post:

Dear MoveOn member,
The roof is caving in on the NRA.
Last week, in less than three days, 16 major corporations broke their ties to the NRA. United Airlines. Delta. Enterprise Rent-a-Car. MetLife Insurance. North American Van Lines. Simplisafe Home Security. They all said “enough” and canceled their deals with the NRA.1
Some Republican governors and members of Congress are finally standing up to the NRA as well, with new supporters coming out in favor of everything from an assault weapons ban to universal background checks and raising the age limit on gun purchases.2,3
The backlash against the NRA is growing, and the next big moment to turn up the pressure is the wave of student-led marches and walkouts scheduled for this March and April. MoveOn is committed to helping make these events as big as possible by mobilizing our millions of members nationwide, promoting the marches to our social media audience, elevating the voices of the student leaders at the marches, and more—while continuing to exert direct pressure on companies and investing in community organizations fighting against gun violence.
Will you chip in $3 to our campaign to support the student-led protests, challenge the NRA, and fight the epidemic of gun violence?
Yes, I’ll chip in right now.
The true impact of all the corporations abandoning the NRA isn’t just a public relations embarrassment for the gun lobby. It goes to the heart of their ability to recruit and retain members, and it’s why they lashed out at their former corporate partners this weekend, accusing them of “political and civic cowardice.”4
Right on the organization’s own website, the #2 reason why they say people should join the NRA is for member discounts on everything from hotels to insurance.5 So much for that.
The #BoycottTheNRA movement isn’t finished either. Because of the sustained pressure, Wall Street firms and pension funds are now looking at divestment from the gun industry.6 Pressure is rising on online services like Amazon to stop streaming NRATV.
The brave high school students in Parkland sparked the backlash that’s now making it possible to finally take action on gun safety in state capitols all over the country—and even in Washington, D.C.
Now it’s up to all of us to keep it going. Over the coming weeks, marches and walkouts are being held in Washington, D.C., and at high schools all over the country.
MoveOn members have a history of confronting the NRA with grassroots activism—and winning. In 2015, after the massacre in Oregon, we organized tens of thousands of “gun owners for gun control” and brought a cohort of this group to D.C. MoveOn members were on stage with President Obama when he signed his most significant executive action against gun violence. After the Las Vegas massacre, we helped pressure the Democratic Party to officially reject funds from gun manufacturers and their lobbyists. And after the violence in Virginia, we endorsed a slate of candidates who supported sensible gun laws—and who beat NRA-backed candidates up and down the ballot.
The myth of NRA invincibility is just that—a myth. And if we can prove that members of Congress and other elected officials can stand up to the NRA and gain political support, it will be the beginning of the end of the gun lobby’s chokehold on American politics.
MoveOn is committed to doing whatever it takes to take down the NRA and prevent the next tragic mass shooting. Are you with us?
Yes, I’ll chip in $3.
Thanks for all you do.

Here is a post from a friend of mine:

Are you kidding me?! According to the New York Daily News, New York Mayor Bill De Blasio has hired Miami Dade’s former school head Alberto Carvalho to be the New York School Chancellor.

This will NOT end well. New York parents likely have no idea who their mayor just hired.

In 2013 an investigation into the Miami-Dade School Police Department (M-DSPD) uncovered several police officers, and School Resource Officers, admitting to breaking the law because they were instructed to do so by M-DSPD Police Chief Charles Hurley.

During the investigation, Chief Hurley admitted to giving the police officers instructions to hide criminal conduct by students, because of specific demands by School Superintendent Alberto Carvalho.

Alberto Carvalho is a very well connected political figure among Democrats. [Carvalho also has a zipper problem] It was Carvalho’s program to use the police to inflate statistical improvements in schools that eventually led to neighboring Broward County doing the same thing in 2013.

Those policies directly led to the recent school shooting in Parkland.

New York – Mayor de Blasio has selected Miami Superintendent Alberto Carvalho — an illegal immigrant who rose to prominence and became a citizen in the process — to lead the city’s school system.

De Blasio will officially announce Carvalho, 53, on Thursday as his chancellor pick to run the nation’s largest school system, City Hall spokesman Eric Phillips said.

Carvalho was born in Portugal to a working-class family and came to the United States in the early 1980s as an undocumented immigrant.

And here is another post from them, one that they shared from someone else:

To Deborah Leh, Ed.D.
Superintendent Wheatland Chili School District
13 Beckwith Avenue
Scottsville, NY 14546

2/28/2018

To: Superintendent & School Board, Wheatland Chili School District

First, let me sincerely thank you for your service to the generous taxpayers of Wheatland-Chili and to the parents and students of the Wheatland-Chili Central School District.

I am writing today to express my concern about the upcoming political rally scheduled for March 14th at many Schools. It is my understanding that the #EnoughWalkout is a student led initiative and will be sanctioned/endorsed by school administrators and board leadership. It is also my understanding that this event will occur at school facilities, during official school hours. I have been informed that parents (who will be notified) have been prohibited from attendance at or involvement in the planning/execution of this event.

My concern rests initially in the blatant political nature of the #Enough Walkout which has been organized nationally by adults. The #Enough website is hosted at www.womensmarch.com
and it’s organizers are exclusively adults with very clear political ambitions, primarily social justice through gun control legislation at the national and local level.
They are funded and endorsed by a specific political party and large political organizations. It is incumbent upon the leaders at WCCS to protect all children from political exploitation and potential coercion at any level.
Using children to promote a legislative agenda is wrong. Furthermore, the safety of children who have opposing political views on gun control should be considered, respected and represented.

In addition, there have been reports nationwide of ‘student-led’ walkouts that have resulted in violence, intimidation and arrest. In California, five students were arrested at a walkout for assault and destruction of private property.
A student led CNN Town Hall event descended into chaos with slanderous attacks on 2nd Amendment advocates as ‘baby killers’ with ‘blood on their hands’. Some of the speakers had to be escorted out of the building due to threats and intimidation. Gun control is a polarizing political debate nationwide and to infuse this debate with emotion and anger is potentially dangerous for students. WCCS‘s first responsibility is to provide for the safety of all students.

Lastly, I am grieved by the insistence that parents be prohibited from planning, participating or even monitoring this event to provide for the safety of their own individual children. Multiple Supreme Court decisions have affirmed that it is the natural right of every parent to control the education and upbringing of their children. This liberty is central to our free society. The concept of representative democracy should be respected by WCCS Administrators and The School Board, with a commitment to respecting and affirming parental authority.

I am formally requesting that the WCCS School Board host a special meeting to inform parents and the community about the specifics of this scheduled event and answer pertinent questions about who the real organizers are of this event and the content. If this cannot be arranged prior to the March 14th event I would recommend postponing the sanctioned walk out and working with parents to arrange an alternate event on a different date.

I share your belief that WCCS students deserve an outlet for grief and discussion in relation to the horrific violence perpetrated upon innocent students in Florida. This is an amazing opportunity to address those issues as a community with parents, teachers and students working together to make our community peaceful and safe.

I look forward to further correspondence on this matter and thank you again for your tireless service to our community.

Thank you.

And yet another post:

The correct interpretation of the *law* based on “sex” discrimination, didn’t include redefining to “gender.” Via a *guidance* letter.

In reply to this post from the New York Department of Education:

New York State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia and New York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman today vehemently objected to the recent decision by the federal Department of Education to no longer investigate civil rights complaints from transgender students regarding access to bathroom facilities. In a letter sent today, the Attorney General and Commissioner reminded school districts across New York State that – irrespective of the federal government’s decision – they have independent duties under federal and state law to protect transgender students from discrimination and harassment in their schools and at all school functions.

The federal government’s announcement earlier this month is just the latest action to further diminish civil rights protections for transgender students and follows the February 2017 decision by President Trump and the federal Departments of Education and Justice to rescind guidance that clarified federal legal protections for transgender students.

“Given recent events and changes in priorities under the Trump administration, as parents, educators and leaders of state agencies we must all work together to protect all the children in our schools,” said State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia. “It is appalling to see the federal government refuse to investigate these important civil rights complaints from transgender youth, who are valued members of our schools and communities across New York State. No child should endure harassment or discrimination and we must create learning environments that are safe and welcoming for all. Statistics show that transgender youth are particularly at risk, with more than half of these students attempting suicide at least once by their 20th birthday. We need to offer further support to these children and not turn our backs on those most in need. The guidance we have developed with Attorney General Schneiderman and our partners places an emphasis on respecting all students and all people.”

“Over and over again, the Trump administration has made clear its disdain for the basic rights of transgender Americans,” Attorney General Schneiderman said. “Regardless of what happens in Washington, the law remains the law in New York — and school districts have independent duties to protect transgender students from discrimination and harassment when they go to school. My office will continue to use every tool at our disposal to ensure that transgender kids are safe in their schools and are provided equal access to all programming and facilities consistent with their gender identity.”

My boy’s 8th grade teacher turned yesterday’s class into a gun control lecture. She told the kids they could dump their 2 weeks of hard work on a current assignment if they instead wished to write a letter supporting gun control.

Here is a post from an anti-Common Core group:

“Have you ever had an issue you were really passionate about but felt like you had to tiptoe around, so as not to upset a bunch of people?

For me, that issue is public education.

To be sure, I’ve certainly tackled the issue more than a few times here on my blog, but I’ve always held back just a bit because I didn’t want to make anyone mad. (Although a few people always seem to get irritated, anyway.)

Well, I’ve decided that I’m not going to hold back any longer.

Several times a year, several times a month, perhaps, I’ll come across an article somewhere, or a letter to the editor, or even enter into a conversation about what needs to be done to fix our nation’s schools. The problem is that most people don’t realize the real root of this problem, and that is…

Our schools are never going to be fixed because they’re already doing what they were intended to from the beginning.

And therein lies the problem.

Schooling vs Education

You see, most people don’t realize that the public education system was never designed to educate in the first place. It was set in place as a means to train obedient citizens (think of it as a giant social engineering experiment) and future factory workers.

Consider this quote by John D. Rockefeller, philanthropist and one of the masterminds behind compulsory schooling:

“I don’t want a nation of thinkers, I want a nation of workers.”

Or this quote by John T. Gates, advisor to John Rockefeller and founder of Rockefeller Foundation, Rockefeller University, General Education Board:

“We shall not try to make these people or any of their children into philosophers or men of learning or of science. We are not to raise up among them authors, orators, poets, or men of letters. We shall not search for embryo great artists, painters, musicians. Nor will we cherish even the humbler ambition to raise up from among them lawyers, doctors, preachers, statesmen, of whom we now have ample supply.”

Truth be told, I could go on and on with quotes like these, but here’s the gist of it:

Schooling and education are two different things.

Education is about exploration and learning how to think.

Schooling (which is what our public schools are a part of) is about training and teaching children what to think.

Someone who is being educated will be told, “Do some research on this topic. Study the evidence, weigh both sides, and make an informed conclusion.”

Someone who is being schooled is told, “This is how it is because scientists, historians, and other people who are smarter than you have already figured it out. There’s no need to look into it further.”

Now before I feel the wrath of teachers everywhere, let me just say that I am not suggesting for one minute that teachers are knowingly a part of this. I have nothing but respect for the teachers who are out there “in the trenches” every day. I am fully aware that, in essence, they are doing what they were trained to do, that many of them genuinely love their students, and that even if they sense that something is wrong with all this, their hands are tied.

I get it. So this isn’t directed at educators – at all.

I’m just trying to open your eyes.

Indoctrination

Make no mistake about it, public school students are being indoctrinated every single day. You may assume a child’s lessons and assignments are about academics, and they are on the surface, but that isn’t all.

One of the goals of the public education system is to shape a child’s morals and character, and those views are built in to every worksheet, every quiz, every textbook, and you can bet it’s a major part of Common Core.

(Warning: Graphic example…Last week a friend from my church called the superintendent of her grandson’s school district because he came home with a psychology quiz which included a question about whether or not beverages will affect the taste of semen. When she confronted the superintendent, he actually had the nerve to say that that textbook was approved by the school board, and he didn’t have time to read every page of every textbook.)

It’s about politics. It’s about political correctness. It’s about teaching children to submit to authority in all circumstances.

Separation of Families

In the past, I’ve written about the possibility that compulsory schooling has contributed to the breakdown of the family, and I still feel firmly that this is the case.

I find it ironic that one of the “reasons” compulsory schooling was instituted was because of child labor laws. So…they took children out of factories and put them in a different kind of factory, only now they’re forced to do it by law, and they don’t get paid for it.

Huh??

Then, after children are in this factory school setting all day, very possibly followed by “voluntary” after-school programs, they are expected to come home and complete two hours of homework and often help with household chores.

And we wonder why the family unit is weak??

Wrapping It Up

Suffice it to say, all of these things are done by government-run schools on purpose. Their main goals are to train a populace that is unable to think on its own, is easily influenced, is willing to work for very little, embraces a moral code that makes it easiest for them to control, and has no real ties to their families.

Looking around me today, I think our schools are without a doubt doing what they were intended to do. Worrying about how to save them won’t get us anywhere because, let’s face it –

Schools aren’t broken. We are. And it’s because of them.

“School is a twelve-year jail sentence where bad habits are the only curriculum truly learned. I teach school and win awards doing it. I should know.”
― John Taylor Gatto, Dumbing Us Down: The Hidden Curriculum of Compulsory Schooling”

Here is  another post that was shared in said group:

“I cannot tell you that Hitler took Austria by tanks and guns; it would distort history.

If you remember the plot of the Sound of Music, the Von Trapp family escaped over the Alps rather than submit to the Nazis. Kitty wasn’t so lucky. Her family chose to stay in her native Austria. She was 10 years old, but bright and aware. And she was watching.

“We elected him by a landslide – 98 percent of the vote,” she recalls.

She wasn’t old enough to vote in 1938 – approaching her 11th birthday. But she remembers.

“Everyone thinks that Hitler just rolled in with his tanks and took Austria by force.”

No so.

Hitler is welcomed to Austria

“In 1938, Austria was in deep Depression. Nearly one-third of our workforce was unemployed. We had 25 percent inflation and 25 percent bank loan interest rates.

Farmers and business people were declaring bankruptcy daily. Young people were going from house to house begging for food. Not that they didn’t want to work; there simply weren’t any jobs.

“My mother was a Christian woman and believed in helping people in need. Every day we cooked a big kettle of soup and baked bread to feed those poor, hungry people – about 30 daily.’

“We looked to our neighbor on the north, Germany, where Hitler had been in power since 1933.” she recalls. “We had been told that they didn’t have unemployment or crime, and they had a high standard of living.

“Nothing was ever said about persecution of any group – Jewish or otherwise. We were led to believe that everyone in Germany was happy. We wanted the same way of life in Austria. We were promised that a vote for Hitler would mean the end of unemployment and help for the family. Hitler also said that businesses would be assisted, and farmers would get their farms back.

“Ninety-eight percent of the population voted to annex Austria to Germany and have Hitler for our ruler.

“We were overjoyed,” remembers Kitty, “and for three days we danced in the streets and had candlelight parades. The new government opened up big field kitchens and
everyone was fed.

“After the election, German officials were appointed, and, like a miracle, we suddenly had law and order. Three or four weeks later, everyone was employed. The government made sure that a lot of work was created through the Public Work Service.

“Hitler decided we should have equal rights for women. Before this, it was a custom that married Austrian women did not work outside the home. An able-bodied husband would be looked down on if he couldn’t support his family. Many women in the teaching profession were elated that they could retain the jobs they previously had been required to give up for marriage.

“Then we lost religious education for kids

“Our education was nationalized. I attended a very good public school.. The population was predominantly Catholic, so we had religion in our schools. The day we elected Hitler (March 13, 1938), I walked into my schoolroom to find the crucifix replaced by Hitler’s picture hanging next to a Nazi flag. Our teacher, a very devout woman, stood up and told the class we wouldn’t pray or have religion anymore. Instead, we sang ‘Deutschland, Deutschland, Uber Alles,’ and had physical education.

“Sunday became National Youth Day with compulsory attendance. Parents were not pleased about the sudden change in curriculum. They were told that if they did not send us, they would receive a stiff letter of warning the first time. The second time they would be fined the equivalent of $300, and the third time they would be subject to jail.”

And then things got worse.

“The first two hours consisted of political indoctrination. The rest of the day we had sports. As time went along, we loved it. Oh, we had so much fun and got our sports equipment free.

“We would go home and gleefully tell our parents about the wonderful time we had.

“My mother was very unhappy,” remembers Kitty. “When the next term started, she took me out of public school and put me in a convent. I told her she couldn’t do that and she told me that someday when I grew up, I would be grateful. There was a very good curriculum, but hardly any fun – no sports, and no political indoctrination.

“I hated it at first but felt I could tolerate it. Every once in a while, on holidays, I went home. I would go back to my old friends and ask what was going on and what they were doing.

“Their loose lifestyle was very alarming to me. They lived without religion. By that time, unwed mothers were glorified for having a baby for Hitler.

“It seemed strange to me that our society changed so suddenly. As time went along, I realized what a great deed my mother did so that I wasn’t exposed to that kind of humanistic philosophy.

“In 1939, the war started, and a food bank was established. All food was rationed and could only be purchased using food stamps. At the same time, a full-employment law was passed which meant if you didn’t work, you didn’t get a ration card, and, if you didn’t have a card, you starved to death.

“Women who stayed home to raise their families didn’t have any marketable skills and often had to take jobs more suited for men.

“Soon after this, the draft was implemented.

“It was compulsory for young people, male and female, to give one year to the labor corps,” remembers Kitty. “During the day, the girls worked on the farms, and at night they returned to their barracks for military training just like the boys.

“They were trained to be anti-aircraft gunners and participated in the signal corps. After the labor corps, they were not discharged but were used in the front lines.

“When I go back to Austria to visit my family and friends, most of these women are emotional cripples because they just were not equipped to handle the horrors of combat.

“Three months before I turned 18, I was severely injured in an air raid attack. I nearly had a leg amputated, so I was spared having to go into the labor corps and into military service.

“When the mothers had to go out into the work force, the government immediately established child care centers.

“You could take your children ages four weeks old to school age and leave them there around-the-clock, seven days a week, under the total care of the government.

“The state raised a whole generation of children. There were no motherly women to take care of the children, just people highly trained in child psychology. By this time, no one talked about equal rights. We knew we had been had.

“Before Hitler, we had very good medical care. Many American doctors trained at the University of Vienna..

“After Hitler, health care was socialized, free for everyone. Doctors were salaried by the government. The problem was, since it was free, the people were going to the doctors for everything.

“When the good doctor arrived at his office at 8 a.m., 40 people were already waiting and, at the same time, the hospitals were full.

“If you needed elective surgery, you had to wait a year or two for your turn. There was no money for research as it was poured into socialized medicine. Research at the medical schools literally stopped, so the best doctors left Austria and emigrated to other countries.

“As for healthcare, our tax rates went up to 80 percent of our income. Newlyweds immediately received a $1,000 loan from the government to establish a household. We had big programs for families.

“All day care and education were free. High schools were taken over by the government and college tuition was subsidized. Everyone was entitled to free handouts, such as food stamps, clothing, and housing.

“We had another agency designed to monitor business. My brother-in-law owned a restaurant that had square tables.

“Government officials told him he had to replace them with round tables because people might bump themselves on the corners. Then they said he had to have additional bathroom facilities. It was just a small dairy business with a snack bar. He couldn’t meet all the demands.

“Soon, he went out of business. If the government owned the large businesses and not many small ones existed, it could be in control.

“We had consumer protection, too

“We were told how to shop and what to buy. Free enterprise was essentially abolished. We had a planning agency specially designed for farmers. The agents would go to the farms, count the livestock, and then tell the farmers what to produce, and how to produce it.

“In 1944, I was a student teacher in a small village in the Alps. The villagers were surrounded by mountain passes which, in the winter, were closed off with snow, causing people to be isolated.

“So people intermarried and offspring were sometimes retarded. When I arrived, I was told there were 15 mentally retarded adults, but they were all useful and did good manual work.

“I knew one, named Vincent, very well. He was a janitor of the school. One day I looked out the window and saw Vincent and others getting into a van.

“I asked my superior where they were going. She said to an institution where the State Health Department would teach them a trade, and to read and write. The families were required to sign papers with a little clause that they could not visit for 6 months.

“They were told visits would interfere with the program and might cause homesickness.

“As time passed, letters started to dribble back saying these people died a natural, merciful death. The villagers were not fooled. We suspected what was happening. Those people left in excellent physical health and all died within 6 months. We called this euthanasia.

“Next came gun registration. People were getting injured by guns. Hitler said that the real way to catch criminals (we still had a few) was by matching serial numbers on guns. Most citizens were law-abiding and dutifully marched to the police station to register their firearms. Not long afterwards, the police said that it was best for everyone to turn in their guns. The authorities already knew who had them, so it was futile not to comply voluntarily.

“No more freedom of speech. Anyone who said something against the government was taken away. We knew many people who were arrested, not only Jews, but also priests and ministers who spoke up.

“Totalitarianism didn’t come quickly, it took 5 years from 1938 until 1943, to realize full dictatorship in Austria. Had it happened overnight, my countrymen would have fought to the last breath. Instead, we had creeping gradualism. Now, our only weapons were broom handles. The whole idea sounds almost unbelievable that the state, little by little eroded our freedom.”

“This is my eyewitness account.

“It’s true. Those of us who sailed past the Statue of Liberty came to a country of unbelievable freedom and opportunity.

“America is truly is the greatest country in the world. “Don’t let freedom slip away.

“After America, there is no place to go.”

When I read articles about this a few years ago, I thought, “How ridiculous! That won’t happen in our school district.” Well, here we are about to enter high school next year and kids will be REQUIRED to wear a heart rate monitor in gym class. Has anyone had success in opting their children out of this? What questions should we be asking?

Please take the time today and write Central Bucks schooldistrict and ask them why they are allowing an ultra left group like Womens March.org bully our schools into having political marches and walkouts on Wednesday March 14th. Here is the letter I just sent to the superintendent, John J. Kopicki (jkopicki@cbsd.org) and others. ,

I am not in favor of Central Bucks allowing this political march and walk out to occur at our schools on Wednesday March 14th.. We must keep politics out of schools. The ultra left group Womens March has bullied our schools across the nation into approving and accepting a political walk out of students in many of our schools. This is unacceptable. School is a place to learn. It is not be a place to be indoctrinated by EITHER side of the political spectrum.

My daughter is a 9th grade student at Tamanend Middle School and I am very upset that she has to go through this nonsense at school. Kids today have enough pressures and decisions on themselves. We should not be adding more to their plate with political marches and walk outs where they have to chose sides.

I would like to know publicly, where Central Bucks stands on this matter and I would like to know why you are allowing this to happen in our schools.

Thank you and have a great day,

Not in your school right? You’re probably wrong. This is a highly funded and professionally coordinated event.

Put in your zip code and find out.
Why haven’t your schools notified you? Required permission slips? What if your child doesn’t want to March against the Bill of Rights?

What safety measures are in place? Will your child be ostracized for non participation? Will classes cease to be taught? Why is this during the school day? Why are your taxes being used to fund security and pay teachers to protest the 2A?

Why are schools promoting and endorsing this??? When common core was being rolled out nobody was permitted to “opt out” or speak in defiance. This is teaching students to follow what is going on in the school rather than have discussions at home with family, and is teaching them that our current President is bad. How about they instead take this time to teach students how to reach out to legislators to try to communicate their feelings and seek change?

Just sent this to the school principal

Mr. XXXXX,

My son XXXXX attends your school and I just wanted to check in to ensure that none of your teachers are agitating the children to attend the National School Walkout next Wednesday.

https://www.actionnetwork.org/…/enough-national-school…

While I would expect that my son has absolutely no interest in supporting this interruption, or the cause it claims to represent, I do not want him having to deal with your teachers trying to subvert his views.

In the event that you have students advocating for children to walkout, XXXXX will have my fill support if he chooses to push back on these students.

May I suggest that the school put out a statement that the school and its staff will not be supporting the walkout, and that should individual students choose to support the walkout that they do not pressure other students into participation via gynocentric shaming (bullying).

Thanks,

the schools actively exploit peer pressure themselves.

I have had to write to principals twice in recent years to complain about the school using peer pressure.

1. The school were using collective punishment against the whole year to get students to report another student when the school already knew the student did it. Apparently several students came forward and falsely claimed they did it to get the other students off detention, and the idiot principal believed that meant the kids had character.

2. The school were trying to shame students into signing a pledge to not use the word “retard”. I had to explain the 1st Amendment to the principal and also explain to him that the word tardy comes from the same Latin root word. He was an English major and had never considered that.

Every year I send in my refusal letter but this year, my school send us this letter. Today my kids sat in front of a computer to take a practice test to prepare them to take the real NYS Tests; kids were also told that everybody (including the ones that send in refusal letters) can not refuse to take these practice tests. If it’s not one thing it’s another!!!! I’m also confused to read that the NYS Tests “are no longer linked to a Teacher or Principal evaluation”. So my questions are:
a) Can I refuse these practice tests or I don’t have a choice?
b) If the State Tests are no longer being used for the APPR then why are they still giving them?

Here is a post from the anti-competency based education group:

A year ago, not many people had heard of ACEs. Now even Oprah is spreading the word. It makes me wonder if this isn’t just another excuse to use computers to psychologically profile students, to determine who has ACEs which will become part of their permanent records.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/oprah-winfrey-childhood-trauma-ptsd-60-minutes-report/

____________________________

And here are some replies to said post:

If anyone anywhere decides to quantify ACES, )which is a possibility), then you are right. Emotional and social distress could be turned into a data point. Ugg.

_____________________

The groundwork is already laid in districts that use Standards Based Grading. Teachers are told to separate standards from behavior and just grade the standards. “That will come later” we are told. The technocrats have already found ways to measure a user’s attention on task when working on a device, ways to elicit a student’s response to cleverly worded questions that can create a psychological profile. Teachers rave about how Class Dojo has improved their students’ behavior. It’s already here, ready to go.

_________________

Alison pointed out to me in a private message, SIBs could be part of the reason we’re hearing more and more about ACEs. Once the deficit is quantified through data, billionaires can “invest” in a “solution” that will “prove” they have saved the school and community lots of money, which the community will gratefully pour into their pockets.

____________________

Just recently I realized that there have always been children who suffer from abuse, neglect, death of a parent, etc. But years ago teachers rarely if ever saw the intensity of anger and anxiety issues that we’re seeing now. I’m not saying that there isn’t a problem now, but I am asking why this has never been an issue in the past. Teachers are seeing more and more children who do not respond to the usual rewards and consequences in a school setting. They have extreme anxiety, sensory issues, angry meltdowns and the triggers can be something as minor as a light touch on the arm. I wonder what is going on now that wasn’t happening a decade ago. ACEs seems to explain what’s happening now but I want to know why it’s something new and getting worse each year.

There are now checklists for determining who has ACEs, and there are new interventions for helping students cope with their extreme anxiety and anger and other issues.

__________________

I am not agruing against doing these things. In fact, I’ve seen nearly miraculous changes in students in a school that had the resources to provide one-on-one paraprofessionals who would continually monitor and help the students de-escalate before they had meltdowns. But not all schools have the money for those resources. The train wreck I see coming is that schools aren’t being given enough money, and there’s no way a computer can take the place of caring human teachers, but that has to be the solution if SIBs are involved. It isn’t profitable for the solution to be “hire more highly qualified staff”.

Here is a post from a North Dakota anti-Common Core group:

Why would citizens want to pay for something they DO NOT RECEIVE?????

Citizens are paying millions for ND school state tests. However, DPI and the NDGOP legislature that is mandated by law to receive those test scores, refuse to release the 2017 scores. We are about to spend millions of dollars more on the 2018 test. How about waiting on taking the 2018 test until we get the results of the 2017 test?

The article says the state test is an “accountability” test required by Federal and State law. But aren’t the reporting of these test scores also mandated under these same laws? If not, why not? If North Dakota is a sovereign state, as described in the US Constitution, why is the US Government mandating ANYTHING to the state concerning education? Where is their Constitutional authority? And why should DPI have to BEG DOEd for permission to use the ACT Test? Didn’t Ms. Baesler state that North Dakota now had LOCAL (State) control over education? Or am I wrong? This information implies that the Federal Government STILL is in control over ND education through CCSS and its funding or whatever new name is being used to fool the public.

We CAN BE SURE the test results, which we believe DPI has received, are VERY BAD. If they were good, DPI would have been crowing about their success. Am I wrong?

DPI has announced that many school districts will now take the ACT test as the High School state test. Why?
1. The ND State test is totally useless for educational purposes. So these schools do not want to waste their time and money giving a wasted test.
2. DPI, in this article, says students will give their best effort if the test is the ACT test. But this implies that DPI understands that students will NOT give their best effort on the useless the Common Core-based test or whatever new name is given to fool the public.
3. In addition, DPI can claim that the reason for the 2018 bad scores that have not been taken yet, is because of the split test formats, state CCSS, and ACT Tests. Just wait, this lie will come about October or September 2018.

So why are we spending valuable student school learning time and valuable teacher teaching time when there are no results? Why?

That raises the question of who is benefiting from forcing ND citizens to pay for testing when they cannot even get the results of that testing? The ND State test is worthless for students, teachers, administrators, and the ND Legislature as indicated in the DPI comments attached. So who is benefiting from our expense?

Just some food for thought.

https://www.nd.gov/dpi/SchoolStaff/ICR/press_releases/BaeslerEffortsGiveNDSchoolsNewTestingOption/
