speak out against Common Core

I’ve gone to a part 9 in my blog.

Here is a post from an anti-Competency Based Education (an extension of Common Core, so to speak) group:

Utah’s State School Board just posted that they are discussing an assessment MOU tomorrow. The MOU is with 10 “parties” and American Institutes for Research to share assessment items. The parties are: Connecticut, Idaho, Hawaii, Oregon, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, Virgin Islands, West Virginia, and Wyoming. Upon going to the American Institutes for Research’s website, the MOU is for implementation of Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) assessment.

But, wait, Utah is not supposed to be using NGSS. And, AIR started work with the 10 parties WAY BACK in August 2016–without any transparency or public knowledge. Or, for that matter, State Board knowledge.

So, I went to the Wappingers BOE meeting last night because there was a presentation on the agenda about the progress of the “Strategic Plan” developed by the District 5 years ago (i.e. the implementation of Common Core without reference to what it actually was).
The agenda packet included responses from teachers to a survey about how they thought the standards impacted their teaching and their students.
Since a number of the responses from the teachers included almost verbatim the significant concerns that parents and educators from across the country were screaming and warning districts and legislators about from the moment they were released, the presentation merely referenced the survey but not the actual results.
Shout out to Board Member Ed Sloshower for speaking up about the concerns and not allowing them to go entirely buried and unmentioned.
The presenters (sans Mrs. Lizette Ruiz-Giovinazzi who spoke very authentically and sincerely) instead focused on the “wonderful efforts and continuing professional development of the teachers”.

Fraught with the incessant and chilling jargon-

(“Critical thinking” as always thrown in as verbal window dressing but with zero actual presence)

This ^^^^^^
is how education administrators in this district and across the state and country discuss your children.
This is what they are concerned about.
This is what drives your children’s day, every day, in every grade in every school, 5 days a week all school year long.

There was no mention (from the presenters) about the fact that the teachers acknowledged that Kindergarteners were being overwhelmed with absurd and confusing, age inappropriate curriculum content but starved for actual learning.
That the same is true for virtually all of the special ed students.
And that the high school math as PREDICTED FROM DAY ONE was an overly burdensome, ill conceived program which the elementary math programs fail to prepare the high school students for.
We KNEW.
They KNEW.
EVERYONE KNEW GOING IN.
That this was a train wreck.
And now we have students who have spent the last five years being educationally laid to waste.
And now we have open validation from the teachers that that’s exactly what’s happening.
And the Board and Administration still making presentations about “mapping”.
And having “conversations”.

They’re not coffee table books.
They’re CHILDREN.
REAL LIVE HUMAN BEINGS.
And now they’re in college taking (and paying for) remedial courses. [Remember ‘college and career readiness’? The reason we were doing this to begin with? I guess it didn’t work that well.]
Or struggling through grade school and high school without the most basic skills they need to be successful or simply prepared to meet their own needs in the world.

Whatever “conversations” are going on, they’re not at the board meetings or with the legislators who could change this.
They’re certainly not meaningful enough to move anyone to authentic action. From what was mentioned at the meeting last night, it seems the conversations amount to pity parties for the fact that “there’s nothing we can do because this was forced on us” (as if the board members and administrators are the actual victims here – _-), and then giant planning meetings of the Administrative Mutual Admiration Society about how to map and move our children along through the system before anyone realizes they’ve been educationally starved and destroyed while simultaneously keeping the pensions intact.

We have failed our kids.

We fed them into this destruction machine five years ago and have spent every moment since finding new ways to keep our heads down so no one knows what we did.

I stood at the end of the meeting to state the obvious which should have been stated by the Board Members but of course (save for Ed) wasn’t.

Several of my former colleagues and administrators kind of shrugged their shoulders slightly and hung their heads a bit low.
Others sat up in their standard and tell tale arrogance and dismissiveness.
And as I spoke of the travesty of having allowed our children to be decimated by this financial and political destruction machine with no end in sight, the Board President nodded in agreement as she always does…..before banging her gavel to end the meeting and doing absolutely nothing about it.

Pity the children. 😞

Cobb County Schools will waste precious instructional time next week field-testing questions for the Milestones exam. In total, over 200,000 students across the state are being used as test-company guinea pigs for free.
Thankfully a large group of Cobb parents are screaming ENOUGH! They are refusing to allow their children to participate in these tests.
While the state claims these worthless wastes of time, energy and MONEY are mandatory, it has been made very clear by Governor Deal that parents have, and always will have, the right to refuse participation by their children. The district may choose how to handle refusals. Given the negative value in this effort, we imagine Cobb County would be thrilled not to have to put its students through more hoops for worthless testing.
Opt Out Georgia, its founders, administrators and members support these parents in their efforts to stop the over testing of Georgia’s children. Instructional time is already at a premium.
If the testing company needs to align questions for inclusion in the final tests, we suggest they take an ad out on Craigslist for participants, just like they do for scorers. Its time more parents took back control of their schools.

The tests will return no usable academic information (much like the actual Milestones tests), and no scores will be returned to the state.

What is considered an “educational” video game? Interestingly, Microsoft, who owns Minecraft, has created an Education Version of Minecraft, even though many say it adds no value to the classroom. Anyone whose child is into Minecraft, can tell you how addictive that game is. Ever wonder why edtech is promoting video games in the classroom? If you guessed that it is because they KNOW video games are addictive, (the preferred industry buzzword is *engaging*), and they can collect massive amounts of very lucrative data about the child’s behavior and interactions, you might be onto something.

If you are wondering WHO has access to all this data collected, and what they do with it, you are not alone. ADL is partnered with IMS Global, as is Microsoft. Online curriculum and educational games are being touted by the US Department of Education, in something called the Online Education Resources, OER, or #GoOpen. These are all tied to another federal agency, The Federal Learning Registry, which is a joint data gathering project between the US Dept of Defense and US Dept of Education. We wrote about IMS Global, OER, Learning Registry data collection, here. We know that online math programs like DreamBox collect 50,000 data points per hour, and Knewton, an adaptive learning platform, collects 5 to 10 million data points, per student, per day. Don’t forget that another project called LearnSphere, funded by the US Government, makes it possible to connect and collect student data from all online activity, across multiple websites, platforms.

If you are wondering HOW online vendors and even schools can collect and share your child’s data without your knowledge or consent, it’s because a federal law meant to protect children’s privacy, FERPA, was weakened in 2011 so that “parents wouldn’t get in the way” of data collection.

YOU CAN PUT A STOP TO THIS by asking the new US Dept of Education Secretary, Betsy DeVos, and President Trump to fix FERPA and protect children’s privacy. Oh, and ask to opt out of screens at school. **It is your right.**

Why is the 2nd grade team worrying with STAAR stuff? They don’t start taking them until 3rd grade? Are they having them do a practice STAAR while the rest of the school is testing? My oldest is a 5th grader, we’ve opted out by staying home for the entire testing window in the past, which is usually the full week. And my youngest is in kinder, and I plan to keep him home on STAAR testing days this year. Mostly because the younger kids schedules are disrupted even though they’re not taking the test, and they usually don’t even get to have their normal recess times. It’s awful. So, don’t feel bad to keep him home, Momma.

He started crying saying he will never pass the essay part because it has to be done in one hour. He was literally stressed out about it. He is only 8!!! So they put that pressure on you, too. Their bully tactics are really annoying. I do what is right for my children. I don’t care about saving any system. Honestly, I would encourage you to find a way to homeschool. Such pressure is not healthy for your son or your family. Even if you opt out of the test, he is still in that environment.

It’s a scare tactic…i think if a certain percentage refuse, they do lose CCRPI points, but the only way that the testing will change is if parents push back against it. No school that i know of has ever been hurt by refusing the test.

I have a question: For clarification, does this OPT OUT apply to “mid-year assessments”, as well? I have a child who is doing “online public school”. I was told that my daughter is “required” to do a “mid-year assessment” of her reading and math skills. She had to sit at a computer, and read words and sentences to a “teacher”, and figure numbers, for about 20 minutes. I think my daughter did very well. Ten minutes after we were finished, I received an email saying my child does not meet “benchmarks” and tested below grade level in all areas. I was pretty livid. Needless to say, I am regretting my choice to do this online school. My question here is, “Legally, Can I opt out of these types of assessments in the future?” I understand about opting out of MCAs, and polls, and surveys, and such, but is there the same “provision” to refuse these types of assessments? thank you very much for everything!

I know for those who work with Pearson (K-12 etc.), Pearson is pretty strong in NOT letting opt outs occur. You can always try! But these tests are how many of the companies make their living. If it’s not a standardized test though, but part of the regular class structure, I would think your child would need to take it.

Thx. My 6 year old sat in front of a computer and read words from a long list that appeared on the screen. The woman would point to the words with an arrow and give her a few seconds to say the word. If she started to say the word incorrectly, my daughter would be interrupted and the woman would say the word for her .

So state testing time is coming up here in Minnesota and I reached out to my child’s principal to tell her we are opting out, here was the teacher’s response to this

“This new way of opting out, that is having to fill the form out is new to us to. We were told that if a student opts out it will go in their permanent record that they “did not meet” state testing.”

Will this affect my daughters ability to get into college in regards to having good grades? She is an excellent student and her grades show that, I just don’t want these darn tests to affect her negatively if she doesn’t take them. Thank you!

We have been awaiting news that the federal DOE has accepted the MN “State Plan”. It is all good for the opt out families!! No language that states students are failing standards. Opt out students are listed as “not participating”.

And to add- you do not have to use the state form. I write a simple letter to testing coordinator, about a month before testing dates. I call or get confirmation of receipt if letter too.
Maybe also let the principal know that the form is not valid.

Those state forms are now out of date with the acceptance of the US DOE for our State Plan. I suggest writing your own letter, too. These keeps the conversation about students under parental authority, not the state’s-want-to-be authority.

My child’s school has just told me that if she is opted out of the MCA’s she will be considered “not proficient”. I’ve been concerned about what this means on her permanent record, too.

What your school told you is old language. The MDE changed it in the summer after thousands of people emailed and called them. Some of us here also testified (including [names withheld] and others) asking the MDE to remove that language. And they did!

My son’s algebra teacher tried to force him to do IXL. I couldn’t believe the pressure he used on me too. He now just chooses 10 questions per unit printed off instead of the torture that the online program is

this is a post I wrote a few days ago on two charter schools that were denied at district/county levels and rubber stamped at the state level. They were funded heavily by “Silicon Schools Fund” and “Innovate” schools. Perseverance was approved in full and Promise as a K8 instead of K12 (even though material revisions are not legal through the appeals process). Double check this number if you post it but Silicon Schools Fund has somewhere around 70 Million dollars to throw around to push whatever they want into our communities. 5 yrs ago my sons’ elementary school started using iXL. My son quickly discovered that it was giving wrong answers. I took screen shots and informed the teacher and principal. Nobody cared and they are still using that program!

They peddled this on my son FIVE years ago. We never participated since he had slower processing speeds and this program amongst other ramped up his anxiety. Is it me, or is it rocket science that you don’t put timed assignments in front of a child with processing difficulties?

A parent from West Irondequoit High School sent this to me today with concerns about a few of the seminars. Specifically:

* In school showing of the highly controversial
movie ‘I’m Not Racist Am I?’

* Privilege Walk Exercise

* Blue Eye Brown Eye Exercise

While some of the presentations seem perfectly fine… the above are highly controversial and parents were NOT notified until today. This is happening on FRIDAY of this week.

I would encourage parents to ACCOMPANY their kids to these seminars at the very least. Very confusing and nuanced topics are presented that often cause emotional distress for kids. Or contact the school directly to question the wisdom of this endeavor.

School attendance has a huge impact on a student’s academic success… starting in kindergarten and
continuing through high school.
We realize some absences are unavoidable due to health problems or other circumstances. We also know that
when students miss too much school – regardless of the reason – it can cause them to fall behind academically.
Your child is less likely to succeed if he or she is chronically absent – which means missing 18 or more days
over the course of an entire school year. Research shows:
• Children chronically absent in kindergarten and 1st grade are much less likely to read at
grade level by the end of 3rd grade.
• By 6th grade, chronic absence is a proven early warning sign for students at risk for
dropping out of school.
• A child is chronically absent if he or she misses just two days every month!
Some considerations that will help ensure that your child attends school regularly on time are:
• Make sure your children keep a regular bedtime and establish a morning routine.
• Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
• Ensure your children go to school every day unless they are truly sick.
• Avoid scheduling vacations or doctor appointments when school is in session.
• Talk to teachers, counselors, or administrators for advice if your children feel anxious about going to
school.
• Develop back up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call a family member, neighbor,
or another parent to take your child to school.

Many parents do not care because our culture has made them irrelevant.
Remember the Village? If children are raised in care facilities, schools, and after school activities, where do they learn to run a home, have any kind of routine, much work ethic, and how to care for others? The Village somehow does not teach these things and many families stopped teaching them before I entered college. In the 1970s.

School was sold to the parents of the boomers as life’s panacea and my generation was raised for careers. When I got to college, precious few of my room mates had any life skills.They could not manage a check book, no wonder so many ended up in debt! They had very limited cooking skills. One roommate could only make tacos. None of them cleaned up after themselves. They said their moms did it all because they wanted a perfect house. That generation got married, went to careers and many of their children ended up latch key and not trained to either run a home or raise children. Many of those entered parenthood with even fewer skills. We have gone down hill because parents stopped parenting, thinking, if I get the best teachers, Sunday school teachers, coaches, and youth leader, my job is done. But as long as we provide the Village mentality, no one takes responsibility for the outcome. Its always someone else’s fault. Parents, society, and the village are all partners in this mess.

Most parents I have worked with, it never occurred to them they needed to train their children. They just thought all they had to do was tell them what do do or stick a chart on the wall. When their children are untrained and developing executive function, they are asked to do things independently they are not ready for, parents get in battles with their children.

We have made a mess of things as a society. We just cannot blame the parents only, most of whom were never taught by their parents–
Gen Xers, because they were not taught by their parents
Boomers, because they were not taught by their parents,
Boomer’s moms were not taught by their moms during the war, because they were too busy doing the work left by the men who went to war.

After WWII the men came home. 10% of homes had tv in 1950 by 1960 90% had them. The false narrative sold to moms in the 50s via TV (moms who had not been taught during the war) was that dad went to work, children went to school, moms did everything else. Why do I say false narrative? Because mom doing everything, was not the previous norm, families worked together and children got work ethic and how to run a home by working with their parents. Now all of the sudden the modern mom was shown women in dresses with pearl necklaces, immaculate homes, and children with little responsibility outside school.

The 60s women rebelled against that narrative. So we threw the baby out with the wash. Most men and women still marry. We prepared generations for careers but intentionally did not raise them to deal with domestic duties of running a home or parenting. As if getting a high paying job would somehow cause the house to run by its self and the village can raise the children. This was short sighted. It is a result of myopic feminism.

Later some tv working moms had housekeepers.

Now Moms get told to assign chores, but chores assigned without the training, underlying habits, and the developed executive function needed to work independently, do not usually lead to work ethic, but to procrastination.

As a result, many parents are filled with unrealistic expectations and few skills to cope– they check out. Sure, there are parents that can parent and run a home, but too many struggle with this, because they were not taught and because all the years they grew up they were given the message in school that somehow, the domestic work of rearing families and caring for our homes is demeaning. Of course it does not need to be that way. But society is unwilling to face the issue and make the changes needed. The result is this will continue. And for every family in this situation that has more than two children, that means more of the next generation will be unprepared.

We could revalue families. Revalue carring for our homes. Revalue the discipline of habit. Nah, I doubt it will happen..

You make some really excellent points! I especially was drawn to the concept that schools and society are training kids for the job world, but no one is training them for family life and responsibilities. And the latter of the two is infinitely more important. Remember the quote, “No other success can compensate for failure in the home.” What does success in the workplace matter if our families are in ruins?

Question? We opted our daughter out of testing and now they put her in a 2nd grade classroom during testing and had her doing the second grade work which was math. My daughter was confused as to why she wasn’t doing her own math. I called the teacher and she said that she felt that by doing the second grade math would help her with her current math by giving her confidence and help other kids with their work. So I told her that I didn’t know our daughter was that far behind in math. She said that that was just her thinking on the matter? What should we do? Can we pull her from school for that time? Well, talked to the teacher today and she got a little tight liped as she said that she could make provisions to give our daughter other work. I proceeded to tell her with our daughter next to us that our daughter felt demeaned being part of the 2nd grade class. I told the teacher that I would rather have her in school doing something productive rather than keep her home and tge teacher then agreed. Thank you all so much for your help!

My solution to this is, my children are opted out of all Chromebook activities(including my high schoolers). If it is an important test it can be taken on paper and done with a pencil. Just my opinion and teachers have honored my choices.

We know there’s little to no evidence that “personalized learning” works. Many parents, education advocates, and teachers are concerned about safety, privacy, efficacy surrounding online personalized learning.

Why did policy makers, school board members, teachers unions, jump on the artificial personalized learning bandwagon to sell out teachers and students? Did they buy into the Vander Ark gotta make the shift sales pitch without evidence to support personalized learning’s effectiveness or researching its health risks? Are these same policy makers and Silicon Valley folks going to repackage and rebrand personalized learning, give us a new name for the online learning system that collects and remembers and analyzes every click? Will they repackage personalized learning as something “new” like competency based (blockchain) education and tell it is somehow different and better and safer?

We need to hold tech companies and educrats accountable.

Parents need to be given the choice of textbook and face to face human teacher, rather than screen learning. Sensitive data (biometric, medical and mental health, behavioral evaluations) should never be collected or leave the school without parent consent. In recent days, former Silicon Valley folks have acknowledged problems with the tech industry.
Let’s hope these ex-Silicon Valley folks and policy makers will truly help us protect children.

Let’s hope they will give parents a voice.

A protest against the Bill of Rights using our children to drive an agenda. This message is one I vehemently oppose.

I join the ranks of many concerned parents who would like to see enhanced security at our High School entrance ways which would help deter a “bad guy with a gun” by a “good guy with a gun”. Sadly, even with ( your high school) most stringent firearm laws, a criminal will find ways to break them—as a non-prescribed drug will find its way into the hands of a drug dealer despite our laws; as illegal border crossings continue despite our immigration laws, those who legally obtain citizenship and valid doctors’ prescriptions should never be shamed or punished for the vile actions of these violators.

I am hoping we Parents will be notified about April’s “Walk Out” to better understand its goal and intended mission so that we are better able to discern if participation is in the best interests of our children — our young American minor citizens.

A web site has been set up to shame GA legislators who have not jumped onto the school choice bandwagon and supported every piece of legislation that facilitates its kudzu-paced expansion. It is NOT my intention to malign these legislators or school choice supporters. But I have concerns. Please take a minute to read my explanation and see if you share my (somewhat over-simplified) concerns…

I have looked at a lot of evidence and been lectured by a lot of people. I’ve concluded that “school choice” is a mixed bag, at best. Despite the “school choice is the magic bullet that will fix education,” mantra that is being pushed by both parties, I don’t believe School Choice will improve anything, as long as common core is the ONLY CHOICE in public schools.

I am not against school choice. There just isn’t any definition of exactly what that is. Or what it isn’t. And I prefer to support parental choice, which many parents have to sign away, when they sacrifice to get their kids into out-of-neighborhood charter schools. There are a lot of negatives like that around this movement, but they are never discussed. (Why is that?)

Our first order of business needs to be getting rid of common core and ESSA if we want to restore education IN EVERY PUBLIC SCHOOL.

I avoided criticizing school choice as long as I could. There is so much rampant pro-School Choice fervor, it’s pretty much a no win. But I have to be intellectually honest and I don’t think blind allegiance to a nebulous ‘school choice’ agenda is going to fix much, as long as common core is in EVERY public school.

I also have concerns that people OUTSIDE of GA (including Betsy DeVos’s Foundation) have FUNDED the school choice movement here. And they have never helped us in our quest to Stop Common Core. (One California-controlled organization actually worked against us.) So who is calling the shots in GA? I don’t think it is Georgians. I know it isn’t parents. And that is troubling.

Apparently, the school choice FUNDERS are back in GA, and they are maligning legislators who are not blindly jumping on the choice bandwagon. They’ve got something going called the Georgia Center for Opportunity – a school choice pushing web site that is giving away yellow socks to go with those nifty scarves.

I encourage Parents to get information from a variety of sources and perspectives, and make your own determination about whether supporting a blanket, ill-defined school choice agenda is the way you want to go.

We’ve got Charter-mania in GA already. And while the jury is still out, the negatives are coming to the surface. I will try to post some resources in this thread and invite some other activists to comment. Please also post your information pro- and con. We need to have this discussion. And our legislators and gubernatorial candidates need to hear it.

From my brief research, it seems that the GA Center for Opportunity is funded by some of the same foundations that pushed Common Core and Charter schools in GA. They are part of the State Policy Network and also affiliated with ALEC. They reportedly have a cumulative $80 million at their disposal. Update: Our principal received this yesterday at 1pm. Hopefully you can read this on this red paper but he is telling me the law has just changed. A student may take the sage assessment and the end-of-course test and the student may choose the higher score. If they ace the sage test they can also decide not to take the final at all. A student opted out takes comparable end of course test only. 😡 I explained to him that this is an unfair advantage! They get two tries and my kid gets one. His answer was that this is the new state rule and we have to stick to that. He also offered that most teachers, and I am dealing with a difficult one (tenure ring any bells?) might make an accommodation for my student to retake the test if they do poorly. Seriously.

I would have a discussion with the teacher and/or the principal, I would ask that since the other students get to take the higher of the two tests, that your child be given the opportunity to take a second test or retake the first test taking the higher score of the two.

I have come to the teachers using the angle that the SAGE is a waist of my child’s learning time. He can use the time to learn more. The teachers and principal seem to agree with that especially on subjects he is lacking in. I also let them know Im happy to provide the work he can do during testing, Im also happy to come to the school and teach him if needed. They are always surprised. Im not sending my kids to school for day care, believe it or not I expect them to actually learn something that will help them contribute to society, not learn how to take a test.

There has been a problem with how the rule was interpreted by some staff and subsequent information that was sent out to districts.

It will be discussed in Standards and Assessment committee in March.

This committee doesn’t have a strong presence of board members that fight for opt-out rights so please write and come express your concerns to the board.

I’ve called it kumbaya circles that endanger students and staff. THIS is the public school solution to bullying. It is NOT working. Parkland was awarded accolades for best implementation of Restorative Justice in Florida…

No consequences. No discipline. No suspensions. No expulsions. Why? Schools ratings are determined by reports to outside agencies AND THIS progressives claim discipline is the driving force of the “Schools to Prison pipeline.”

2. We’ve seen from other investigations that the disorder and violence in schools does not matter to OCR investigators. At least in OKC, they admitted they never talked to teachers. Who knows if they looked at the awful teacher surveys and comments.

4. OCR forced Milwaukee to overhaul its school discipline policies. The district has kept student surveys secret, but man, this certainly doesn’t look good. For this massive fight, the students “face *potential* suspensions.”

5. The the wake of Parkland, there’s been a whole lot of debate on gun policy. Virtually none on discipline policy. Perhaps worth more debate. As @washingtonpost noted, Broward County embraced restorative justice and dramatically decreased police referrals

6. However, it is worth noting that OCR went into New Rochelle NY and forced them to change their discipline policy. Last month, three students were stabbed in one week and Valeree Schwab was killed with a steak knife. No mention of OCR in public forums. nypost.com/2018/01/30/fat….

The ‘opt out/refuse’ routine has gone on too long. I ‘opted out’ my daughter from the 2014 PARCC field test, and my other one since then. And how much has the movement grown and to what end??? Too many parents rolled over and played dead on the matter, giving the government time to find a way to make it personally unfavorable for parents to opt out/refuse. What a shame. We are being steamrolled because of our own inaction.

We are in same boat! We gave had five children & oldest four are in mid to late 20’s and our youngest in 7th grade(same district )however from the time we had youngest son start kindergarten and definitely by first grade we saw lack of “true”learning & teaching! Teachers were out of classroom more for “lessons and learning to cc standards and grading these horrendous tests! We sat down with principal as well as superintendent and spoke out to the nonsense of kids taking tests on computers or laptops for gym class for one then taking away recess time or limiting recess time outside depending on grade level. Elementary school was he’ll fir our youngest when it should have been great joy as it was for our oldest children with so many fond memories! To make matters worse our district k-12 was fully implementation of IB!!!it’s like cc on steroids!

Mira Loma High School and Churchill Middles School Students in Sacramento are planning a walkout tomorrow. I have seen that there are huge efforts to get kids to walk out March 14th and I hear it is being pushed nationwide.
I also got an email from “move on” talking about how they have the NRA on the Ropes and to get your kid to participate in the walkouts planned tomorrow. This has gone on far enough!
I told my girls that unless they can accurately explain why the 2nd amendment was put in the constitution they couldn’t participate. And why this walkout will make a change? They couldn’t. They were doing it because others told them they needed to.

2 things this is an unapproved absence and is cutting class.
Both are suspension worthy events in my book.( and cause for severe grounding in my house)

Yep, my kids charter school are actually having a project and it’s this whole thing and to get full credit has to do about 8 things but also walk out on Mar 14. A mandatory walk out. My husband and I spoke to the director, charter school. I also said I didn’t want my children to participate but also requested to know what is planned for supervision for my children for 19 mins.

Are you kidding me?! According to the New York Daily News, New York Mayor Bill De Blasio has hired Miami Dade’s former school head Alberto Carvalho to be the New York School Chancellor.

This will NOT end well. New York parents likely have no idea who their mayor just hired.

In 2013 an investigation into the Miami-Dade School Police Department (M-DSPD) uncovered several police officers, and School Resource Officers, admitting to breaking the law because they were instructed to do so by M-DSPD Police Chief Charles Hurley.

During the investigation, Chief Hurley admitted to giving the police officers instructions to hide criminal conduct by students, because of specific demands by School Superintendent Alberto Carvalho.

Alberto Carvalho is a very well connected political figure among Democrats. [Carvalho also has a zipper problem] It was Carvalho’s program to use the police to inflate statistical improvements in schools that eventually led to neighboring Broward County doing the same thing in 2013.

Those policies directly led to the recent school shooting in Parkland.

New York – Mayor de Blasio has selected Miami Superintendent Alberto Carvalho — an illegal immigrant who rose to prominence and became a citizen in the process — to lead the city’s school system.

De Blasio will officially announce Carvalho, 53, on Thursday as his chancellor pick to run the nation’s largest school system, City Hall spokesman Eric Phillips said.

Carvalho was born in Portugal to a working-class family and came to the United States in the early 1980s as an undocumented immigrant.

First, let me sincerely thank you for your service to the generous taxpayers of Wheatland-Chili and to the parents and students of the Wheatland-Chili Central School District.

I am writing today to express my concern about the upcoming political rally scheduled for March 14th at many Schools. It is my understanding that the #EnoughWalkout is a student led initiative and will be sanctioned/endorsed by school administrators and board leadership. It is also my understanding that this event will occur at school facilities, during official school hours. I have been informed that parents (who will be notified) have been prohibited from attendance at or involvement in the planning/execution of this event.

My concern rests initially in the blatant political nature of the #Enough Walkout which has been organized nationally by adults. The #Enough website is hosted at www.womensmarch.com
and it’s organizers are exclusively adults with very clear political ambitions, primarily social justice through gun control legislation at the national and local level.
They are funded and endorsed by a specific political party and large political organizations. It is incumbent upon the leaders at WCCS to protect all children from political exploitation and potential coercion at any level.
Using children to promote a legislative agenda is wrong. Furthermore, the safety of children who have opposing political views on gun control should be considered, respected and represented.

In addition, there have been reports nationwide of ‘student-led’ walkouts that have resulted in violence, intimidation and arrest. In California, five students were arrested at a walkout for assault and destruction of private property.
A student led CNN Town Hall event descended into chaos with slanderous attacks on 2nd Amendment advocates as ‘baby killers’ with ‘blood on their hands’. Some of the speakers had to be escorted out of the building due to threats and intimidation. Gun control is a polarizing political debate nationwide and to infuse this debate with emotion and anger is potentially dangerous for students. WCCS‘s first responsibility is to provide for the safety of all students.

Lastly, I am grieved by the insistence that parents be prohibited from planning, participating or even monitoring this event to provide for the safety of their own individual children. Multiple Supreme Court decisions have affirmed that it is the natural right of every parent to control the education and upbringing of their children. This liberty is central to our free society. The concept of representative democracy should be respected by WCCS Administrators and The School Board, with a commitment to respecting and affirming parental authority.

I am formally requesting that the WCCS School Board host a special meeting to inform parents and the community about the specifics of this scheduled event and answer pertinent questions about who the real organizers are of this event and the content. If this cannot be arranged prior to the March 14th event I would recommend postponing the sanctioned walk out and working with parents to arrange an alternate event on a different date.

I share your belief that WCCS students deserve an outlet for grief and discussion in relation to the horrific violence perpetrated upon innocent students in Florida. This is an amazing opportunity to address those issues as a community with parents, teachers and students working together to make our community peaceful and safe.

I look forward to further correspondence on this matter and thank you again for your tireless service to our community.

Schneiderman today vehemently objected to the recent decision by the federal Department of Education to no longer investigate civil rights complaints from transgender students regarding access to bathroom facilities. In a letter sent today, the Attorney General and Commissioner reminded school districts across New York State that – irrespective of the federal government’s decision – they have independent duties under federal and state law to protect transgender students from discrimination and harassment in their schools and at all school functions.

The federal government’s announcement earlier this month is just the latest action to further diminish civil rights protections for transgender students and follows the February 2017 decision by President Trump and the federal Departments of Education and Justice to rescind guidance that clarified federal legal protections for transgender students.

“Given recent events and changes in priorities under the Trump administration, as parents, educators and leaders of state agencies we must all work together to protect all the children in our schools,” said State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia. “It is appalling to see the federal government refuse to investigate these important civil rights complaints from transgender youth, who are valued members of our schools and communities across New York State. No child should endure harassment or discrimination and we must create learning environments that are safe and welcoming for all. Statistics show that transgender youth are particularly at risk, with more than half of these students attempting suicide at least once by their 20th birthday. We need to offer further support to these children and not turn our backs on those most in need. The guidance we have developed with Attorney General Schneiderman and our partners places an emphasis on respecting all students and all people.”

“Over and over again, the Trump administration has made clear its disdain for the basic rights of transgender Americans,” Attorney General Schneiderman said. “Regardless of what happens in Washington, the law remains the law in New York — and school districts have independent duties to protect transgender students from discrimination and harassment when they go to school. My office will continue to use every tool at our disposal to ensure that transgender kids are safe in their schools and are provided equal access to all programming and facilities consistent with their gender identity.”

“Have you ever had an issue you were really passionate about but felt like you had to tiptoe around, so as not to upset a bunch of people?

For me, that issue is public education.

To be sure, I’ve certainly tackled the issue more than a few times here on my blog, but I’ve always held back just a bit because I didn’t want to make anyone mad. (Although a few people always seem to get irritated, anyway.)

Well, I’ve decided that I’m not going to hold back any longer.

Several times a year, several times a month, perhaps, I’ll come across an article somewhere, or a letter to the editor, or even enter into a conversation about what needs to be done to fix our nation’s schools. The problem is that most people don’t realize the real root of this problem, and that is…

Our schools are never going to be fixed because they’re already doing what they were intended to from the beginning.

And therein lies the problem.

Schooling vs Education

You see, most people don’t realize that the public education system was never designed to educate in the first place. It was set in place as a means to train obedient citizens (think of it as a giant social engineering experiment) and future factory workers.

Consider this quote by John D. Rockefeller, philanthropist and one of the masterminds behind compulsory schooling:

“I don’t want a nation of thinkers, I want a nation of workers.”

Or this quote by John T. Gates, advisor to John Rockefeller and founder of Rockefeller Foundation, Rockefeller University, General Education Board:

“We shall not try to make these people or any of their children into philosophers or men of learning or of science. We are not to raise up among them authors, orators, poets, or men of letters. We shall not search for embryo great artists, painters, musicians. Nor will we cherish even the humbler ambition to raise up from among them lawyers, doctors, preachers, statesmen, of whom we now have ample supply.”

Truth be told, I could go on and on with quotes like these, but here’s the gist of it:

Schooling and education are two different things.

Education is about exploration and learning how to think.

Schooling (which is what our public schools are a part of) is about training and teaching children what to think.

Someone who is being educated will be told, “Do some research on this topic. Study the evidence, weigh both sides, and make an informed conclusion.”

Someone who is being schooled is told, “This is how it is because scientists, historians, and other people who are smarter than you have already figured it out. There’s no need to look into it further.”

Now before I feel the wrath of teachers everywhere, let me just say that I am not suggesting for one minute that teachers are knowingly a part of this. I have nothing but respect for the teachers who are out there “in the trenches” every day. I am fully aware that, in essence, they are doing what they were trained to do, that many of them genuinely love their students, and that even if they sense that something is wrong with all this, their hands are tied.

I get it. So this isn’t directed at educators – at all.

I’m just trying to open your eyes.

Indoctrination

Make no mistake about it, public school students are being indoctrinated every single day. You may assume a child’s lessons and assignments are about academics, and they are on the surface, but that isn’t all.

One of the goals of the public education system is to shape a child’s morals and character, and those views are built in to every worksheet, every quiz, every textbook, and you can bet it’s a major part of Common Core.

(Warning: Graphic example…Last week a friend from my church called the superintendent of her grandson’s school district because he came home with a psychology quiz which included a question about whether or not beverages will affect the taste of semen. When she confronted the superintendent, he actually had the nerve to say that that textbook was approved by the school board, and he didn’t have time to read every page of every textbook.)

It’s about politics. It’s about political correctness. It’s about teaching children to submit to authority in all circumstances.

Separation of Families

In the past, I’ve written about the possibility that compulsory schooling has contributed to the breakdown of the family, and I still feel firmly that this is the case.

I find it ironic that one of the “reasons” compulsory schooling was instituted was because of child labor laws. So…they took children out of factories and put them in a different kind of factory, only now they’re forced to do it by law, and they don’t get paid for it.

Huh??

Then, after children are in this factory school setting all day, very possibly followed by “voluntary” after-school programs, they are expected to come home and complete two hours of homework and often help with household chores.

And we wonder why the family unit is weak??

Wrapping It Up

Suffice it to say, all of these things are done by government-run schools on purpose. Their main goals are to train a populace that is unable to think on its own, is easily influenced, is willing to work for very little, embraces a moral code that makes it easiest for them to control, and has no real ties to their families.

Looking around me today, I think our schools are without a doubt doing what they were intended to do. Worrying about how to save them won’t get us anywhere because, let’s face it –

Schools aren’t broken. We are. And it’s because of them.

Farmers and business people were declaring bankruptcy daily. Young people were going from house to house begging for food. Not that they didn’t want to work; there simply weren’t any jobs.

“My mother was a Christian woman and believed in helping people in need. Every day we cooked a big kettle of soup and baked bread to feed those poor, hungry people – about 30 daily.’

“We looked to our neighbor on the north, Germany, where Hitler had been in power since 1933.” she recalls. “We had been told that they didn’t have unemployment or crime, and they had a high standard of living.

“Nothing was ever said about persecution of any group – Jewish or otherwise. We were led to believe that everyone in Germany was happy. We wanted the same way of life in Austria. We were promised that a vote for Hitler would mean the end of unemployment and help for the family. Hitler also said that businesses would be assisted, and farmers would get their farms back.

“Ninety-eight percent of the population voted to annex Austria to Germany and have Hitler for our ruler.

“We were overjoyed,” remembers Kitty, “and for three days we danced in the streets and had candlelight parades. The new government opened up big field kitchens and
everyone was fed.

“After the election, German officials were appointed, and, like a miracle, we suddenly had law and order. Three or four weeks later, everyone was employed. The government made sure that a lot of work was created through the Public Work Service.

“Hitler decided we should have equal rights for women. Before this, it was a custom that married Austrian women did not work outside the home. An able-bodied husband would be looked down on if he couldn’t support his family. Many women in the teaching profession were elated that they could retain the jobs they previously had been required to give up for marriage.

“Then we lost religious education for kids

“Our education was nationalized. I attended a very good public school.. The population was predominantly Catholic, so we had religion in our schools. The day we elected Hitler (March 13, 1938), I walked into my schoolroom to find the crucifix replaced by Hitler’s picture hanging next to a Nazi flag. Our teacher, a very devout woman, stood up and told the class we wouldn’t pray or have religion anymore. Instead, we sang ‘Deutschland, Deutschland, Uber Alles,’ and had physical education.

“Sunday became National Youth Day with compulsory attendance. Parents were not pleased about the sudden change in curriculum. They were told that if they did not send us, they would receive a stiff letter of warning the first time. The second time they would be fined the equivalent of $300, and the third time they would be subject to jail.”

And then things got worse.

“The first two hours consisted of political indoctrination. The rest of the day we had sports. As time went along, we loved it. Oh, we had so much fun and got our sports equipment free.

“We would go home and gleefully tell our parents about the wonderful time we had.

“My mother was very unhappy,” remembers Kitty. “When the next term started, she took me out of public school and put me in a convent. I told her she couldn’t do that and she told me that someday when I grew up, I would be grateful. There was a very good curriculum, but hardly any fun – no sports, and no political indoctrination.

“I hated it at first but felt I could tolerate it. Every once in a while, on holidays, I went home. I would go back to my old friends and ask what was going on and what they were doing.

“Their loose lifestyle was very alarming to me. They lived without religion. By that time, unwed mothers were glorified for having a baby for Hitler.

“It seemed strange to me that our society changed so suddenly. As time went along, I realized what a great deed my mother did so that I wasn’t exposed to that kind of humanistic philosophy.

“In 1939, the war started, and a food bank was established. All food was rationed and could only be purchased using food stamps. At the same time, a full-employment law was passed which meant if you didn’t work, you didn’t get a ration card, and, if you didn’t have a card, you starved to death.

“Women who stayed home to raise their families didn’t have any marketable skills and often had to take jobs more suited for men.

“Soon after this, the draft was implemented.

“It was compulsory for young people, male and female, to give one year to the labor corps,” remembers Kitty. “During the day, the girls worked on the farms, and at night they returned to their barracks for military training just like the boys.

“They were trained to be anti-aircraft gunners and participated in the signal corps. After the labor corps, they were not discharged but were used in the front lines.

“When I go back to Austria to visit my family and friends, most of these women are emotional cripples because they just were not equipped to handle the horrors of combat.

“Three months before I turned 18, I was severely injured in an air raid attack. I nearly had a leg amputated, so I was spared having to go into the labor corps and into military service.

“When the mothers had to go out into the work force, the government immediately established child care centers.

“You could take your children ages four weeks old to school age and leave them there around-the-clock, seven days a week, under the total care of the government.

“The state raised a whole generation of children. There were no motherly women to take care of the children, just people highly trained in child psychology. By this time, no one talked about equal rights. We knew we had been had.

“Before Hitler, we had very good medical care. Many American doctors trained at the University of Vienna..

“After Hitler, health care was socialized, free for everyone. Doctors were salaried by the government. The problem was, since it was free, the people were going to the doctors for everything.

“When the good doctor arrived at his office at 8 a.m., 40 people were already waiting and, at the same time, the hospitals were full.

“If you needed elective surgery, you had to wait a year or two for your turn. There was no money for research as it was poured into socialized medicine. Research at the medical schools literally stopped, so the best doctors left Austria and emigrated to other countries.

“As for healthcare, our tax rates went up to 80 percent of our income. Newlyweds immediately received a $1,000 loan from the government to establish a household. We had big programs for families.

“All day care and education were free. High schools were taken over by the government and college tuition was subsidized. Everyone was entitled to free handouts, such as food stamps, clothing, and housing.

“We had another agency designed to monitor business. My brother-in-law owned a restaurant that had square tables.

“Government officials told him he had to replace them with round tables because people might bump themselves on the corners. Then they said he had to have additional bathroom facilities. It was just a small dairy business with a snack bar. He couldn’t meet all the demands.

“Soon, he went out of business. If the government owned the large businesses and not many small ones existed, it could be in control.

“We had consumer protection, too

“We were told how to shop and what to buy. Free enterprise was essentially abolished. We had a planning agency specially designed for farmers. The agents would go to the farms, count the livestock, and then tell the farmers what to produce, and how to produce it.

“In 1944, I was a student teacher in a small village in the Alps. The villagers were surrounded by mountain passes which, in the winter, were closed off with snow, causing people to be isolated.

“So people intermarried and offspring were sometimes retarded. When I arrived, I was told there were 15 mentally retarded adults, but they were all useful and did good manual work.

“I knew one, named Vincent, very well. He was a janitor of the school. One day I looked out the window and saw Vincent and others getting into a van.

“I asked my superior where they were going. She said to an institution where the State Health Department would teach them a trade, and to read and write. The families were required to sign papers with a little clause that they could not visit for 6 months.

“They were told visits would interfere with the program and might cause homesickness.

“As time passed, letters started to dribble back saying these people died a natural, merciful death. The villagers were not fooled. We suspected what was happening. Those people left in excellent physical health and all died within 6 months. We called this euthanasia.

“Next came gun registration. People were getting injured by guns. Hitler said that the real way to catch criminals (we still had a few) was by matching serial numbers on guns. Most citizens were law-abiding and dutifully marched to the police station to register their firearms. Not long afterwards, the police said that it was best for everyone to turn in their guns. The authorities already knew who had them, so it was futile not to comply voluntarily.

“No more freedom of speech. Anyone who said something against the government was taken away. We knew many people who were arrested, not only Jews, but also priests and ministers who spoke up.

“Totalitarianism didn’t come quickly, it took 5 years from 1938 until 1943, to realize full dictatorship in Austria. Had it happened overnight, my countrymen would have fought to the last breath. Instead, we had creeping gradualism. Now, our only weapons were broom handles. The whole idea sounds almost unbelievable that the state, little by little eroded our freedom.”

“It’s true. Those of us who sailed past the Statue of Liberty came to a country of unbelievable freedom and opportunity.

I have had to write to principals twice in recent years to complain about the school using peer pressure.

1. The school were using collective punishment against the whole year to get students to report another student when the school already knew the student did it. Apparently several students came forward and falsely claimed they did it to get the other students off detention, and the idiot principal believed that meant the kids had character.

2. The school were trying to shame students into signing a pledge to not use the word “retard”. I had to explain the 1st Amendment to the principal and also explain to him that the word tardy comes from the same Latin root word. He was an English major and had never considered that.

Every year I send in my refusal letter but this year, my school send us this letter. Today my kids sat in front of a computer to take a practice test to prepare them to take the real NYS Tests; kids were also told that everybody (including the ones that send in refusal letters) can not refuse to take these practice tests. The groundwork is already laid in districts that use Standards Based Grading. Teachers are told to separate standards from behavior and just grade the standards. “That will come later” we are told. The technocrats have already found ways to measure a user’s attention on task when working on a device, ways to elicit a student’s response to cleverly worded questions that can create a psychological profile. Teachers rave about how Class Dojo has improved their students’ behavior. It’s already here, ready to go.

Just recently I realized that there have always been children who suffer from abuse, neglect, death of a parent, etc. But years ago teachers rarely if ever saw the intensity of anger and anxiety issues that we’re seeing now. I’m not saying that there isn’t a problem now, but I am asking why this has never been an issue in the past. Teachers are seeing more and more children who do not respond to the usual rewards and consequences in a school setting. They have extreme anxiety, sensory issues, angry meltdowns and the triggers can be something as minor as a light touch on the arm. I wonder what is going on now that wasn’t happening a decade ago. ACEs seems to explain what’s happening now but I want to know why it’s something new and getting worse each year.

There are now checklists for determining who has ACEs, and there are new interventions for helping students cope with their extreme anxiety and anger and other issues.

I am not agruing against doing these things. In fact, I’ve seen nearly miraculous changes in students in a school that had the resources to provide one-on-one paraprofessionals who would continually monitor and help the students de-escalate before they had meltdowns. But not all schools have the money for those resources. The train wreck I see coming is that schools aren’t being given enough money, and there’s no way a computer can take the place of caring human teachers, but that has to be the solution if SIBs are involved. It isn’t profitable for the solution to be “hire more highly qualified staff”.

Why would citizens want to pay for something they DO NOT RECEIVE?????

Citizens are paying millions for ND school state tests. However, DPI and the NDGOP legislature that is mandated by law to receive those test scores, refuse to release the 2017 scores. We are about to spend millions of dollars more on the 2018 test. How about waiting on taking the 2018 test until we get the results of the 2017 test?

The article says the state test is an “accountability” test required by Federal and State law. But aren’t the reporting of these test scores also mandated under these same laws? If not, why not? If North Dakota is a sovereign state, as described in the US Constitution, why is the US Government mandating ANYTHING to the state concerning education? Where is their Constitutional authority? And why should DPI have to BEG DOEd for permission to use the ACT Test? Didn’t Ms. Baesler state that North Dakota now had LOCAL (State) control over education? Or am I wrong? This information implies that the Federal Government STILL is in control over ND education through CCSS and its funding or whatever new name is being used to fool the public.

We CAN BE SURE the test results, which we believe DPI has received, are VERY BAD. If they were good, DPI would have been crowing about their success. Am I wrong?

DPI has announced that many school districts will now take the ACT test as the High School state test. Why?
1. The ND State test is totally useless for educational purposes. So these schools do not want to waste their time and money giving a wasted test.
2. DPI, in this article, says students will give their best effort if the test is the ACT test. But this implies that DPI understands that students will NOT give their best effort on the useless the Common Core-based test or whatever new name is given to fool the public.
3. In addition, DPI can claim that the reason for the 2018 bad scores that have not been taken yet, is because of the split test formats, state CCSS, and ACT Tests. Just wait, this lie will come about October or September 2018.

So why are we spending valuable student school learning time and valuable teacher teaching time when there are no results? Why?

That raises the question of who is benefiting from forcing ND citizens to pay for testing when they cannot even get the results of that testing? The ND State test is worthless for students, teachers, administrators, and the ND Legislature as indicated in the DPI comments attached. So who is benefiting from our expense?
